SLIDESHOW: New Moon Promo Tour

The lunar cycle may show us in a waning crescent stage right now, but the frenzy for "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," is in full swing.

And several film-related events have sprung up, to celebrate and capitalize on the "Twilight" phenomenon, and on "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," opening a week from tonight. The film, along with last year's "Twilight," are based on the book series by Brigham Young University graduate Stephenie Meyer.

On Saturday night, two screen vampires, known to fans as Laurent and Caius, will greet fans at Fashion Place Mall.

Next weekend, a two-day premiere party sponsored by the Utah Web group Twilight Moms takes over two halls in Sandy's South Towne Expo Center.

"We had a similar event last year, for 'Twilight,' and we had to start turning people way after 1,000 tickets," said Kirsten Wright, one of the event managing directors, from West Valley City. "This time, we can have 2,300 people at one time, and we're hoping not to sell out."

Wright said the Web site, www.twilightmoms.com, is not quite two years old, and boasts 30,000 members worldwide. It is fueled by the love of the "Twilight" books and films, Wright said.

"Everyone has a personal view of what they find enjoyable," she said, of the book series. "I think it has very attractive characters, who are easy to relate to. The dialogue really shows you their personality, and either you or like that, or you know people like them. Edward has got his flaws, but he's still a very likeable character, and Bella is so human. It's more that she's flesh and blood. She's very believable as a real person."

Wright admit's she's one of those people who always things the book is better than the film, but said she's looking forward to the "New Moon" premiere.

John Snow, Peery's Egyptian Theater production manager and independent film programmer, said "Twilight" series star Robert Pattinson was the reason for selecting "Little Ashes," the indie film showing Monday at the Ogden theater.

"I scheduled it because of the 'Twilight' release, but I programmed it because I'm a big fan of Luis BuAfA+-uel."

"Little Ashes" is a 2008 film that stars Pattinson as artist Salvador Dali, and tells the story of Dali's college friendship with future poet, dramatist and theater director Federico GarcAfAa Lorca, and with future filmmaker BuAfA+-uel.

Dali and Lorca took their relationship to a physical and romantic level, although both would go on to marry women. The film is rated R for language, sexual content, and a brief scene some audience members may find disturbing, Snow said.

"I wanted to see BuAfA+-uel story, but I was also impressed with Robert Pattinson," he said. "When I saw the film, he struck me as an actor of great promise. I thought he was going to do very, very well for the rest of his career."

Snow said he hopes Pattinson will draw in audiences.

"It's not always easy to get people to come to independent films in Ogden unless you hang out a Sundance sign," he said.

Ogden also has its own New Moon Ball coming up. Here are details on scheduled events:

* On Saturday, two of the film's supporting cast members come to Murray's Fashion Place Mall, one of only 15 stops nationwide. The cast members are expected to be Edi Gathegi as Laurent, the dreadlocked vampire from "Twilight," who returns in the sequel with plans to kill series heroine Bella; and Jamie Campbell Bower as Caius, one of three elders who lead the vampires' governing board, the Voltari.

The free event, at 7:30 p.m., will feature live music and a question-and-answer session with the film actors. Fashion place is at 6191 S. State.

* On Monday, Peery's Egyptian Theater screens "Little Ashes."

The film casts Pattinson in a different kind of "taboo" romance, with another male artists. The film screens at 7:30 p.m., and costs $5 through (801) 689-8700 or at the door, 2415 Washington Blvd., Ogden.

* A week from today, the Sandy's South Towne Expo Center launches "The New Moon Experience," a two-day, film-based event, to coincide with the Nov. 20 release of the much anticipated "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," based on the novel by Brigham Young University graduate Stephenie Meyer. Video games, slices of Bella's birthday cake, and walk-though replicas of sites in the film, and film tickets, are among the draws.

Ticket packages, some including a concert and "prom," are $25-$55, available through www.eventsbyalice.com. South Towne is at 9575 S. State.

* And on Nov. 21, the Ben Lomond Hotel hosts Ogden's New Moon Twilight Ball, a fundraiser for Juvenile Diabetes. Costumes, formal wear, and semi-formal wear are all welcome, but not required. Tickets are $20/couples, $8/children 6-12, younger attend free. www.utahvampires.com/tickets.htm. The Ben Lomond is at 2510 Washington Blvd.
