Christmas is a few days away, and the New Year's celebration just a week later. The post-holiday season doesn't have to be a letdown -- there are plenty of reasons to celebrate in January.
SBlt National Soup Month. What better time to celebrate the warm goodness of soup than during the cold of January? Enjoy a bowl of your favorite canned soup, or make a pot of homemade soup.
SBlt Jan. 2, Earth at Perihelion. Earth travels around the sun in an ellipse, rather than a circle. Perihelion is the time when the planet is closest to the sun during the year -- for Utahns, that will be 5 p.m. Jan. 2. Knowing that we're 4 million miles closer to the sun than in June may fool us into feeling warmer, even though we're still so far away that it won't make a difference.
SBlt Jan. 9, Fruitcake Toss Day. Some folks toss out holiday fruitcakes on Jan. 3, but the people of Manitou Springs, Colo., are hosting the 15th Annual Great Fruitcake Toss on Jan. 9. Can't get to Colorado? Host your own fruitcake toss, giving points for distance, accuracy and style.
SBlt Jan. 11, National Clean Off Your Desk Day. According to professional organizers, a cluttered desk isn't the sign of a creative mind, but of indecision. Work through the piles of paper, and decide what to do with each piece. For tips, go to www.organizingresources.com/pressreleases/cleandesk.htm.
SBlt Jan. 14, Dress Up Your Pet Day. If your Dalmation's a diva, or your Siamese is a style maven, this day is for you. Choose outfits based on weather, comfort and personality. www.petstyle.com/news/general/celebrate-national-dress-your-pet-day.
SBlt Jan. 21, National Hugging Day. Give small hugs or bear hugs, and substitute hugs for handshakes -- just ask first.
SBlt Jan. 24, Belly Laugh Day. The idea of this celebration is simple, according to www.bellylaughday.com -- at 1:24 p.m. on Jan. 24, "smile, throw your arms in the air and laugh out loud!"
SBlt Jan. 25, Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day. Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day started in 2001, when a radio station in Indiana held a Bubblympiad. Events included a popping relay, and sculpture and fashion design contests. Bubble Wrap turns 50 in 2010, and you can celebrate by creating your own games for Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day -- or just enjoy popping those little bubbles of air sealed in plastic.
