WEST VALLEY CITY - Envision Utah and the Center for Documentary Arts plans a "Reawakening Jordan River Luncheon" on Thursday, Jan. 14, at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center, 1355 W. 3100 South, in West Valley City.
Registration is at 11:30 a.m., and the two hour program begins at noon. The event celebrates the Jordan River's potential while exploring its past, present and future.
Dr. Karl Haglund, author of Inventing the Charles River, will provide the keynote. With an increased public awareness of the Jordan River's future, as evidenced by the controversy associated with the proposed sports complex in Salt Lake City near the river, Haglund will explain how Boston residents reclaimed the Charles River and made it a regional treasure.
Haglund will also participate on a panel discussion with Ted Wilson, Gov. Gary Herbert's Senior Advisor on Environmental Issues and former Executive Director of the Utah Rivers Council; Chris McCandless, Sandy City councilman; Ty Harrison, Professor Emeritus of Biology, Westminster College; and Chris Cline, Biologist, US Fish and Wildlife Service. The panel discussion is open to the public.
The traveling exhibit of Tillman Crane's mural-size Jordan River photographs will also be unveiled at the luncheon.
"The Tillman Crane photos show the many faces of the Jordan River," said Alan Matheson, Envision Utah's Executive Director. "The photos remind us that the river is a treasure worth preserving and enhancing. I hope the photos will inspire Utahns to thought and action."
The cost is $25 per person and $250 for a table of 10 seats. Chevron is the event's gold sponsor, and the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District the silver sponsor.
RSVP with Kristine at Kwidner@envisionutah.org by Jan. 12.
