Bands heading into battle at Barker Park

NORTH OGDEN -- Monday nights at Barker Park will see battle -- between area bands.

Sponsored by the city of North Ogden, the battle of the bands begins at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the park, 2375 N. Fruitland Drive. Gates open at 6 p.m., and a silent auction will be featured.

Earlier this summer, the bands submitted their CDs and paid a fee to participate in the battle. The battle will continue on July 26 and Aug. 16, with the finals and prizes awarded on Aug. 16.

Bands participating this year are For Your Protection, South Ogden; Relentless, North Ogden; Sweat Band, Ogden Valley; Thunderlake, North Ogden; Phoenix Rising, Washington Terrace; and Sparks Fire, Ogden.

Concert gives hope to child needing transplant

LAYTON -- A benefit concert to help an area child who needs a liver transplant will take place here next week. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Kenley Centennial Amphitheater, 403 N. Wasatch Drive.

Hayden Cullimore, of Salt Lake City, needs the operation to survive, and the family must come up with approximately $200,000. Performers will include tenor Dallyn Vail Bayles, who is currently working with a touring Broadway production of "Phantom of the Opera."

Minimum donation requested for the show is $15, or $50 for a family of five. For further details, call 801-571-3152.

Free concerts offer abundance of styles

OGDEN -- Free concerts abound in downtown Ogden, with free blues, country and folk shows playing throughout the coming week.

At 7:30 p.m. Monday, you can kick up your heels at a hoedown with the Ogden band Jagertown. The concert is on the plaza at The Junction, at 23rd Street and Washington Boulevard.

Next week's Tunes@Noon concert features Ryan Hawthorn. Based in South Weber, he is a blues and country-flavored guitarist who has played with the Weber River Blues Band, The Kap Bros. and The Motherless Cowboys. The show is at noon Wednesday in the Ogden Amphitheater, 343 Historic 25th St.

Also in the Ogden Amphitheater, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Greg Simpson will perform. He is a Utah County Sunday school teacher who plays music with a message.

Stampede headed to farmers market

OGDEN -- Join friends and neighbors along 25th Street and Grant Avenue for the weekly Ogden Farmers and Art Market.

The market gets under way at about 8 a.m. on Saturday. Fruits and vegetables -- as well as baked goods, coffee, lunch delicacies, crafts and jewelry -- are for sale at the market.

At 10 a.m., Stampede, a West Haven-based cowboy swing band, will perform. The concert is part of the Pioneer Days celebration.

Indie rock/hip-hop outfit hits the slopes

SNOWBASIN -- The weekly Sunday concert on the slopes features an indie rock/hip-hop outfit from Salt Lake City.

A Different Element will play at 1 p.m. Sunday at Wildflower Meadow, 3925 E. Snowbasin Road, in the hills above Huntsville. Admission is free.

Blankets and lawn chairs are welcome. Barbecue and beverages will be for sale at the event; no outside food or drink is allowed.

Songwriters share amphitheater stage

LAYTON -- This Sunday's family concert at Kenley Centennial Amphitheater features area songwriters swapping tunes.

The show, at 7 p.m., is in the amphitheater at 403 N. Wasatch Drive.

Songwriters include Davis County-based performers Mike Murphy, John Connors, Jake White, Kat Tingey and Cori Connors.

Murphy has taught at Viewmont High School for 36 years, developing a highly acclaimed guitar program at the school. He has recorded five albums of original songs.

John Connors is an award-winning composer and lively performer whose songs display a strong sense of rhythm with memorable melody and lyrics.

Jake White, of Bountiful, is known for his unique guitar style. His work features inventive tunings and percussive use of the guitar.

Kat Tingey, of Kaysville, has recorded three albums, along with the popular song "Undone."

Cori Connors of Farmington has five albums to her name and has been featured on Radio Dublin and with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

Concert benefits Village Bike project

OGDEN -- A Weber State University student and professor have joined with Youth Impact to organize a concert to raise money to buy bikes for a village in Togo.

The show is at 7 p.m. today in The Basement, an all-ages venue at 329 24th St. Bands will include Ogden-based outfits Fox Van Cleef, Known Reason, Amir Jackson, Cheatwood and more.

Money raised will be donated to The Village Bicycle Project (www.villagebicycleproject.org), which is raising funds to buy and ship bikes and spare parts to farmers in Africa.

Admission is $5; organizers say additional donations are gladly accepted.
