Playwright's apprentices inspire Lyric production

LOGAN -- The Old Lyric Repertory Company apprentices will perform "Into the Daylight" next week.

Richie Call, apprentice program director, wrote the play, which will be staged Monday and Tuesday.

Call says the show was inspired by the apprentices in the program.

"The show comes from them," Call said, in a statement. "It's not biographical, but it's about a group of young adults going through the same experiences and dealing with the same issues that they are.

"In my opinion, the apprentice show is the most exciting theater experience in the valley this summer. It is less like a play and more like a little slice of life."

"Into the Daylight" will play at 2 p.m, 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. Monday, and at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Black Box Theatre, Room 224, in the Chase Fine Arts Center at Utah State University. Tickets are $5.

Dancing bros capture, captivate seven brides

COLLINSTON -- See "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" in a theater that almost looks like it could be authentic to the era.

" 'Seven Brides for Seven Brothers' is a spirited story filled with heartwarming moments, hysterical antics and high-energy dancing that will set your feet tapping," said Heather Gleason, director of the Old Barn Community Theatre production, which opens a week from tonight. "It's old-fashioned fun in the unique historical setting that only the Old Barn can offer."

The Old Barn, at 3605 Bigler Road, Collinston, is a weathered wood structure. A rustic inside wall is adorned with hundreds of horseshoes bearing the names of theater donors.

The musical, set in the Oregon wilderness of the 1850s, tells the story of seven brothers, one of them newlywed, and the rest aching to be. The six decide to kidnap brides from a neighboring town, but then must earn their happy endings.

The musical plays at 7:30 p.m. Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays, July 23 through Aug. 14, with 2:30 p.m. matinees July 31 and Aug. 7. Tickets are $8, $7 for children and senior citizens. Call 435-458-2276 or visit www.oldbarn.org for more information.

A Barn Burner -- a performance followed by a fundraising Dutch oven dinner -- will be at 6 p.m. Thursday. Barn Burner tickets are $16, or $30 per couple.
