Landscapes, portraits, abstracts and sculpture -- August's First Friday Art Stroll has it all.
The First Friday Art Stroll starts at 6 p.m. next Friday in downtown Ogden. Many of the neighborhood galleries stay open until 9 p.m., giving strollers the opportunity to check out the new exhibits and meet the artists. Most of the participating art venues are along Historic 25th Street, from Wall Avenue to Washington Boulevard, making it possible to walk from gallery to gallery. A few more are on surrounding streets. Admission is free.
For more information about the stroll, call (801) 393-3866 or visit the Ogden Arts website, www. artsogden.org.
* Universe City is covering gallery walls with the product of an artistic venture -- portrait posters created by students in a Venture Course in the Humanities.
The Venture program is a partnership between the Weber State University Telitha E. Lindquist College of Arts & Humanities and the Utah Humanities Council. It's a nine-month college-level course designed to help low-income adults further their education and gain confidence in their academic and social abilities. Participants receive a scholarship to study literature, critical writing and thinking, art history, American history and philosophy. Completion of the class is worth 10 college credits, which may help some participants start earning a degree.
The portraits on display were created by students in the program. Using skills learned in class, they interviewed each other, then created posters that communicate stories and characteristics about each person in the class.
Reception, 5-8 p.m. next Friday at 2556 Washington Blvd., Ogden. The exhibit continues 5-8 p.m. Fridays, and 1-6 p.m. Saturdays, through Aug. 21. Other hours by appointment. (801) 458-8959. Free.
* Union Station opens two new exhibits on Aug. 6.
Gallery at the Station, just off the Grand Lobby, hosts work by Mark Willard, Joe Deru and Carlisle.
Carlisle, an artist from Salt Lake City who goes by just one name, is showing nonrepresentational abstract paintings.
"I don't title my work, but reference paintings by outstanding color and size," said Carlisle. "I want people to look at it and let a connection come between them and the painting."
By not giving images a title, she leaves possibilities for the viewers wide open.
"I don't want to direct them in any way -- emotionally or visually," she said. "I want it, hopefully, to make a connection with them just through the visual experience."
Willard, of Brigham City, is exhibiting landscape paintings. Deru, of Marriott-Slaterville, creates bowls and sculptures by turning wood.
Gallery 51, also in Union Station, is showcasing art by Weber State University students William Merritts and Kyle Wilcox.
Reception, 6-8 p.m next Friday at 2501 Wall Ave., Ogden. Both exhibits continue 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday, through Aug. 31. 801-393-9890. Free.
* Ogden Arts has an exhibit of photographs by MaryKay D. Hall, of Ogden. Hall's images are of landscapes and nature.
Reception, 6-9 p.m. next Friday in the street-level suites at 2484 Washington Blvd., Ogden. The show continues 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, through August. (801) 393-3866. Free.
* The Eccles Community Art Center will not be participating in August's art stroll. The current exhibit, the 36th Annual Statewide Competition, continues through Aug. 28.
The art center is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays, and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays, at 2580 Jefferson Ave., Ogden. (801) 392-6935. Free.
