Railroaders add old board games to lineup
PROMONTORY SUMMIT -- If throwing buffalo chips isn't your forte, maybe you can try your luck at checkers.
Old-fashioned board games are a new addition to the annual Railroaders Festival, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Golden Spike National Historic Site.
Checkers, Chinese checkers and Nyout, a game similar to Sorry, will be played from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at an interpretive shelter at the site.
Replica locomotives Jupiter and No. 119 will give steam demonstrations at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. The locomotives arrive at the site at 9:30 a.m., and tours of the cabs will be offered throughout the day.
Re-enactments of the 1869 ceremony marking the completion of the first transcontinental railroad are at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. A fashion show of 1860s clothing begins at 2 p.m.
Visitors can ride a 1950s motorcar, known as a "speeder," which used to be used to transport maintenance workers along the rails.
Other activities include a living-history camp, buffalo chip throwing, boiler stoking, handcar rides, a Lego display, relay games and a railroad safety education program.
Admission is free for the festival and also free on Sunday. The site is 32 miles west of Brigham City; take Interstate 15's Exit 365 and state roads 13 and 83.

Scrapbookers gather for all-night party
WELLSVILLE -- "I wanna cut and glue all night ... and die-cut every day!"

Beginning 2 p.m. Aug. 20 and ending at 5 p.m. Aug. 21, those who pay the $30 fee will be provided with a light dinner and snacks, a space to sleep -- if needed -- in the center's Opera House, and a workplace to preserve those memories on pretty paper.
Local scrapbooking dealers will be on hand to sell supplies to scrappers, just in case they forgot the acid-free glue or decide they need a few embellishments.
The American West Heritage Center is at 4025 S. U.S. 89-91, Wellsville.
