Take time Friday to check out new art

August is drawing to a close, and so are the art exhibits in Ogden's galleries. New exhibits open Sept. 3, during the First Friday Art Stroll.

The First Friday Art Stroll, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. next Friday, allows art lovers the opportunity to check out the new exhibits after regular gallery hours. Many of the art venues are hosting receptions, with artists available to talk about their work.

Most of the participating galleries are along Historic 25th Street, from Wall Avenue to Washington Boulevard. A few more are on surrounding streets. Admission is free.

For more information about the stroll, call 801-393-3866 or visit the Ogden Arts website, http://artsogden.org.

* Union Station hosts an exhibit of paintings by Kimbal Warren and Dave Malone, and pottery by Ben Behunin.

Warren, of Mapleton, creates realistic landscape paintings. According to his website, Warren often packs a week's worth of food on his horses and heads into the mountains to paint. Some of his western images capture the cowboy life.

Malone, of Salt Lake City, paints what he calls abstract landscapes and microenvironments. He starts out without subject matter, exploring how the paint goes on the surface.

"After that stage, I start to go in and be more deliberate," he said, adding that he incorporates found objects from industry, or from nature, such as leaves, stones, pods, berries and tree needles. "I take those objects and draw over the top of the color washes and start to create some order."

Behunin, also of Salt Lake City, creates whimsical pottery. His bowls, clocks, teapots and other items are highly decorated with patterns and faces. Some of his art includes recycled auto parts.

Reception, 6-8 p.m. next Friday, at 2501 Wall Ave., Ogden. The exhibit continues 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday, through Sept. 28. 801-393-9890. Free.

* Eccles Community Art Center focuses on plein-air painting during September.

The Main Gallery features a Cache Valley Plein Air Artists group show. "Plein-air," a French term meaning "in the open air," became popular in the late 1800s. Painting outdoors requires artists to paint quickly to capture the changing atmosphere and light on the scene.

Geri Jensen of West Haven is showing her paintings in the center's Carriage House Gallery. Jensen works in pencil, watercolor, oil and sculpture, creating everything from still life to portraits. She is also a plein-air painter.

Reception, 6-9 p.m. next Friday, at 2580 Jefferson Ave. Ogden. The show continues 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays, and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays, through Sept. 25. 801-392-6935. Free.

* Universe City brings back its "Discount Art/$99.95 or Less" show on Sept. 3-4. The two-days-only show and sale of posters, ceramics, prints, photos, paintings and jewelry allows folks on a limited budget to collect original art. As stated in the title, no art costs more than $99.95. Past exhibitors include Leia Bell of Salt Lake, and Ogdenites Susan Storer, Roberta Glidden, LeRoy Jennings and Steven Stones; most of the artists, and others, are expected to participate in this sale.

Show is 5-8 p.m. next Friday, and 1-6 p.m. Sept. 4, at 2556 Washington Blvd., Ogden. The gallery will be closed for the rest of September. 801-458-8959. Free.

* Ogden Arts features photographs by Ogden Canyon resident Paul Muller. The Palette Club of Ogden wall will be filled with artwork by Susan Jordan.

Jordan, who has been a member of both the Palette Club of Ogden and the Syracuse Guild for Visual Arts, creates nature-inspired art in graphite, ink, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, photography, and graphic software programs.

Reception, 6-9 p.m. next Friday in the street-level suites at 2484 Washington Blvd., Ogden. The show continues 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, through September. 801-393-3866. Free.
