Weber County volunteers

Spotlight

This week United Way of Northern Utah and Weber Housing Authority would like to feature United Way of Northern Utah's Kick-off Campaign as the spotlighted opportunity.

United Way is a unique organization. With a motto of "Live United," its aim is to strive for a nation that is truly and actively working together to improve each individual community as a whole. In doing such, United Way acts as a fundraiser and an advocate for nonprofit organizations that shape neighborhoods and cities. It approaches its mission with a belief that if you reach out a hand to one, you can influence the condition of all. United Way desires to improve education by cutting the number of high school dropouts in half; help people achieve financial stability and to get on the road to economic independence, and increase the number of youth and adults who are healthy.

When a donation is given to a United Way, it benefits the organization's partners: St. Anne's homeless shelter, the Boys & Girls Club, YMCA, Catholic Community Services, Your Community Connection, Ogden Nature Center, and more.

Not only does United Way contribute funds and donations to these organizations, but it actively promotes their causes and help them to achieve their goals.

Sept. 1 marked the beginning of United Way's campaign season to raise money to support Ogden and Brigham City nonprofit organizations and better the community. Donations can be designated to specific organizations, if desired. To donate to United Way, and help give back to the community, contact Durrell Annis at 801-399-5584.

Another opportunity to help United Way's mission is to participate in the Day of Caring on Sept. 8. Volunteers are needed to help participate in several community-wide projects throughout the Ogden and Brigham areas. All of the projects help out local nonprofit organizations that are partnered with United Way. The projects include: weeding gardens at the Ogden Nature Center, helping to facilitate a yard sale for the McKay-Dee Hospital foundation, painting a children's room at the Family Support Center, and reading to children in an after school program for the YMCA. If you are interested in participating in the Day of Caring, contact Samantha MacBeth at vista@uwnu.org or 801-399-5584 ext. 115.

However, if you are seeking a more permanent volunteer position, United Way is also looking for public relations and communication volunteer interns to help write press releases and help with general PR related tasks. If you are interested in this opportunity, contact Zebulon Williams at zwilliams@uwnu.org or 801-399-5584 ext. 102.
