Jewell returns for WSU gig

OGDEN -- After winning fans in droves with her performances at the OFOAM Ogden Music Festival this past June, Eilen Jewell and her band return for an intimate show in the Shepherd Union Building's Wildcat Theater at Weber State University.

The show is at 7 p.m. Wednesday, on campus at 3848 Harrison Blvd.

Jewell, who was born in Boise, Idaho, and spent a few formative years in Ogden earlier this decade, plays a rootsy Americana style with rockabilly elements. Her band includes guitar-slinging journeyman Jerry Miller.

Jewell has also delved into country gospel styles with her band The Sacred Shakers. Her most recent album, "Butcher Holler," is a Loretta Lynn tribute released earlier in the summer.

Admission to the concert is $15. Age 16 and under must have a ticket, but are free with a paying adult. Tickets are available in advance from the WSU box office, 800-WSU-TIKS.

Jennings gets station jazzed

OGDEN -- Jazz returns to Union Station at 7 p.m. Wednesday, when local musician and promoter Benjamin Jennings hosts a night of music with his talented friends.

The show is in Union Station's Grand Lobby, 2501 Wall Ave.

Jennings plays in an assortment of bands around town, including BBC3 and The Liz Wooley Trio. He also assists in producing the Jazz at the Station series that this particular show is a part of, and also handles with booking for other local venues.

Jennings will be joined by Billy Bommer Jr., alto sax; Chris Clemons, trumpet; Ken Critchfield, bass; Don Keipp, vibraphone/drums/percussion; Jed Keipp, drums/percussion; Joe McQueen, tenor sax; Brad Wright, guitar; as well as players to be named later. The group will play a wide-ranging mix of styles.

The show is free, and well-behaved children are welcome.

Vocalocity ushers in autumn

HUNTSVILLE -- Weber County Library's Ogden Valley Branch kicks off its free fall music series at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The library is at 131 S. 7400 East.

Northern Utah's Vocalocity is an a cappella group that performs family-friendly fare. In 2005, they took first place and the audience-favorite award at the Northwest Regional Harmony Sweepstakes, amateur a cappella's big showdown.

This is an outdoor concert, unless inclement weather forces the show inside. Refreshments will be served.

For more information, call the library at 801-337-2660.

Santana sounds in meadow

SNOWBASIN -- As the fall colors begin to touch the treetops at Snowbasin resort, the Sunday summer concerts roll on.

This weekend's entertainment is Abraxas, a Latin rock band from Salt Lake City that pays tribute to Santana. The show is at 1 p.m. at the Wildflower Meadow, 3925 E. Snowbasin Road, in the mountains above Huntsville.

The concert is free. No outside food or drink is permitted, although refreshments will be sold.

For more information, call the resort at 801-620-1000.

Concert benefits students

OGDEN -- Out of a parent's greatest possible sorrow came a scholarship that benefits students at Weber State University.

Adrian Maxson, son of WSU faculty/instructors Carrie and Mark Maxson, was hit by a car and killed April 3, 2007, after leaving a benefit concert hosted by WSU Amnesty International. In his honor, his father started the Adrian Maxson Scholarship for Social Justice.

The scholarship is funded in part by a yearly benefit concert in Adrian Maxson's memory. This year's third annual show is at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 10 in the Browning Center's Austad Auditorium, on campus at 3848 Harrison Blvd.

Talent includes Bill Moio, a Las Vegas-based jazz guitarist who has performed with the legendary soul band Tower of Power. Moio has also appeared with such artists as Marc Russo, Richard Elliott and Joe Diorio.

Also appearing are Tria Fata, a chamber group featuring WSU students Kathryn Palkki, Samuel Runolfson and Nicholas Maughan. Other artists include the WSU Chamber Orchestra, Carrie Maxson and a combo called The Core, which includes WSU music faculty members.

Suggested donation for the show is $10. This can be paid in advance via the WSU box office, 800-WSU-TIKS.
