Island wildlife in spotlight
The Antelope Island State Park Visitor Center opens a new exhibit on Oct. 1 -- a display of photographs by Tom Mathewson focusing on Antelope Island's birds, wildlife and landscapes.
Mathewson grew up taking photos and wound up working with aerial cameras in the Air Force. Now retired, the Layton resident is a full-time photographer. Many of his images are captured on Antelope Island.
The visitor center is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, and Mathewson's photos will be on exhibit through Nov. 30. To get to Antelope Island, take Interstate 15's Exit 332 and head west on Antelope Drive through Syracuse. Admission is $9 per vehicle.

German visit inspires show
LOGAN -- Seventeen Utah State University students just returned from Germany are excited to display the artwork they sketched while visiting the country.
This exhibit is in Gallery 102 in the Chase Fine Arts Center on the Utah State University campus, 610 N. 1110 East.
The artwork is open to the public, free of charge, and can be viewed noon to 4 p.m. today through Thursday.
There will be a closing reception from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, also in Gallery 102. The student artists will attend this reception.
Christopher Terry, who has led a German study-abroad program for several years, said in a news release, "Working in a familiar studio without any distractions may produce polished art, but the experience of living and working in a foreign country adds depth to a student's work."
