Advanced breast cancer surges slightly in young women

Advanced breast cancer among younger women has increased slightly over the last three decades, leaving researchers scratching their heads as to the reason.

According to an article published earlier this year in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers found a small increase in advanced breast cancer in women ages 25 to 39. The study, conducted by Seattle Children’s Hospital, found that advanced cases climbed to 2.9 per 100,000 younger women in 2009, from 1.53 per 100,000 women in 1976.

Robin Williams returns to TV

NEW YORK -- CBS is making a few nips and tucks to network television's most successful schedule, including adding a comedy with Robin Williams playing an unorthodox advertising executive with Sarah Michelle Gellar as his daughter.

Quick-Braised Snapper in Cilantro Broth.

Braised snapper recipe is, well, a snap

The fish stays moist and looks lovely when presented in this light broth. To complete the meal, it would be easy to toss in a small amount of blanched fresh peas, snow peas or haricots verts.

Quick-Braised Snapper in Cilantro Broth

1 clove garlic

1 shallot

1 lemon

2 teaspoons olive oil

3/4 cup no-salt-added chicken broth

1/4 cup packed cilantro leaves

1/4 teaspoon kosher or fine sea salt

FILE- In this Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011 file photo, actress Angelina Jolie poses for a portrait to promote her directorial debut of the film "In the Land of Blood and Honey" in New York. Jolie authored an op-ed for Tuesday’s May 14, 2013 New York Times where she writes that in April she finished three months of surgical procedures to remove both breasts as a preventive measure. She says she’s kept the process private but is writing about it now with hopes she can help other women. (AP Photo/Carlo Allegri, File)

Doctor reacts to Angelina Jolie's decision

Dr. Otis Brawley, the chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, is on the record with a quick post on Angelina Jolie’s startling announcement in a New York Times op-ed that she has had a prophylactic double mastectomy to cut her inherited risk of breast cancer. Jolie’s mother died of the disease at age 56, and the actress found through genetic testing that she carries the BRCA1 gene.

Brawley, who has been an outspoken critic of overtesting, answers many important questions that Jolie’s decision raises.

Exercise? Let’s take it outside: 'Walking Salt Lake City' suggests 34 trips in the area

With the spring weather in full bloom, it’s time get off the treadmill and take your fitness routine outdoors.

For inspiration, you can turn to the book “Walking Salt Lake City” (Wilderness Press, $17.95), co-authored by Lynn Arave of Layton and Ray Boren of Salt Lake City. There are 34 walks outlined in the book, from Dimple Dell in Sandy on the south, to Antelope Island on the north.

Each walk has a map, degree of difficulty, clear route directions, background about the location and points of interest to see along the way.

Caring for oneself important

In today’s world we are given the impression that if we take care of ourselves, we are being selfish. However, we have come to know that if we do not care for ourselves, we cannot care for others.

A main component of loving yourself is taking care of your entire self. It is necessary to look at all of the areas that make up who you are: mental, spiritual, social, emotional, physical and vocational.

Utah has its share of legends, urban myths

We’ve all heard ghost stories around the campfire, rumors in the hallway and unbelievable tales.

Well, I’ve been digging around and have uncovered a few of Utah’s legends or curious tales. Don’t mess with the myth.

There's WHAT at the museum?

Natural history museums are filled with fossils. Railway museums have trains. Local history museums have pioneer clothing. It’s good to know what to expect; it makes sense.

Plus, predictability makes finding the unexpected so much more fun.

So, what kind of oddities can be found in our Top of Utah museums?
