Bird festival art contest announced

Dec 6 2010 - 3:14pm

FARMINGTON  -- The 13th annual Great Salt Lake Bird Festival announces its 2011 Student Art Contest, sponsored by a grant from the Davis County Commissioners' Cup Golf Tournament. All Utah students from kindergarten to 12th grade are invited to submit an original drawing or painting in color of an adult male ruddy duck using personal observation, field guides, or Internet resources to research their artwork.

An estimated 24,000 ruddy ducks nest around the Great Salt Lake each year, and thousands more rest and feed in Northern Utah during fall migration. The male ruddy duck is noted for its cinnamon red plumage and bright blue bill during breeding season.

Contest entries will be judged in one of four grade categories, with winning artists from each category receiving cash prizes. An overall Best of Show image will also be chosen and featured on the 2012 Great Salt Lake Bird Festival's promotional materials. Entries must be hand delivered or postmarked by April 1, 2011 at festival headquarters in Farmington.

All artwork will be displayed for public viewing as part of the festival, to be held May 12-16, 2011. The event is expected to draw more than 3,500 local and out-of-state participants for numerous field trips, workshops, free family activities, and special speakers. Although Utah's incredible array of wild birds is the focus of the festival, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about a range of topics including local geology, reptiles, botany, mammals, and insects.
