Famed artist discusses altered photos

Internationally known artist Curtis Mann, noted for using varnish and bleach to alter photographs and create new images, visits Weber State University on Thursday to talk about his work.

The Chicago artist's illustrated lecture starts at 7 p.m. in the Kimball Visual Arts Center on the WSU campus. Admission is free, and open to all.

"He's definitely working in an area of photography still, but working in a way that's different from most photographers -- that's one of the things that sets him apart from other artists," said Josh Winegar, assistant professor of art at WSU.

Winegar helped set up the visit.

"We went to graduate school together," he said of Mann. "He's one of the people I still keep in contact with, and talk to on a fairly regular basis."

But friendship isn't the reason the art department invited Mann to discuss his work -- it was because of his reputation as a cutting-edge artist.

"Since 2008, so really over the past two years, he's had a total of eight solo exhibitions, and they were at places like the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and the Kansas City Jewish Museum of Contemporary Art, as well as having solo shows in Belgium and Switzerland," said Winegar.

Mann also had work accepted into the 2010 Whitney Biennial at New York's Whitney Museum of American Art. "That's probably the most prestigious, or one of the most prestigious exhibits, in the United States," said Winegar.

Winegar says Mann's lecture, based on the way he works with and investigates photographic images, will likely expand audience members' ideas about art.

"I think that anytime we can bring an artist of his caliber to Ogden, even just to the State of Utah, that's a good thing," he said. "I think it's important for our students, and the public as well, to be introduced to the type of work he's doing, and maybe give them a little broader perspective on art and photography."
