Adirondack chairs safe from weather
A Hudson company is using engineered plastic to make Adirondack chairs that are virtually maintenance-free.
The Rocky River Rondack Co. says its chairs are designed for both durability and comfort. The plastic mimics the look of natural wood but never needs to be sanded, stained, painted or sealed.
The chairs can stay outdoors year-round, although they fold to make them easy to store. They recline in three positions and have a curved back for comfort.
The chairs come in white or toffee and sell for $369 plus shipping on the company's website, www.rondackchairs.com. The company also makes ottomans, side tables and child-size Adirondack chairs.
'Big Book' knows its target audience
Men's Health magazine has always had a good handle on its demographic. Its readers are torn between their desire for rib-eyes and a respectable pant size. They don't have a lot of time for poring over pages, and they want answers fast.
So this book makes its pitch in photo-adorned, bite-sized chapter-ettes that promise ways to "eat more and weigh less" through smart snacks.
Instead of starving the body, then binging at dinner, eat five or more small, healthful meals a day, say Joel Weber and Mike Zimmerman, the authors of "The Men's Health Big Book of Food and Nutrition" (Rodale, $26.99).
And make those dishes count. The book includes plenty of recipes too, including flavorful Thai-Dyed Turkey Burgers, a Pizza with the Works (the "works" being vegetables by the truckload) and Antioxidant Parfait.
There's also permission to enjoy that rib-eye. Seems half the fat in beef is oleic acid, the same heart-healthy compound in olive oil, says Weber. But even the saturated fat has an unexpected, twofold effect -- it reduces the ratio of bad cholesterol to good, and triggers cholecystokinin, the hormone that tells your brain you're full.
Just don't eat the whole cow.
Fitted sheets can be purchased alone
Q: Where can you buy individual sheets? I have three top sheets but no contour sheets to go with them. All I ever see anymore are sheet sets.
A: Flat or fitted sheets packaged individually are less common than they used to be. Target, Bed Bath & Beyond and larger Macy's stores sell some sheets individually, and you might be able to find a limited selection at off-price retailers such as T.J. Maxx and Marshalls.
Mail-order sources are another option. The Company Store, L.L. Bean and Lands' End all sell individual sheets. I also found them at a number of online retailers, including Amazon.com, HardToFindSheets.com, Boscovs.com, Shopbedding.com and CSNStores.com.
If you're really ambitious, you can turn a flat sheet into a fitted sheet by sewing a dart in each corner and adding elastic.
