Luke Tuttle took Best of Show in Bountiful/Davis Art Center's annual Davis School District Secondary Student Exhibition, with a photograph titled "Holi Delhi."
"What I think is amazing about the photograph is that it looks like a National Geographic cover," said Emma Dugal, executive director of the art center.
Tuttle, a senior at Bountiful High School, took the photo at a Holi festival put on by the Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork. During the annual spring celebration, participants throw colored powders.
Tuttle noticed that a fellow Bountiful High student was playing with her red scarf, and asked her to put it on.
"I thought, 'Oh my gosh, this looks great,' " he said. "I got out my camera and started snapping photos."
She only let him take a few pictures, but it was enough to get the winning shot.
Dugal was not surprised that Tuttle was awarded top honors.
"He recently had two pieces in the Statewide Competition here at the art center, which is open, of course, to professional artists living in Utah," she said. "It's quite unusual for a high school student to get accepted into that."
Tuttle started taking pictures in the ninth grade, and took photography classes at school until funding was cut. Then he enrolled in an advanced placement art class.
Tuttle has been invited to display more of his work later this year as the spotlighted emerging artist at the Bountiful/Davis Summerfest International.
"I'm way excited," he said.
The other top winners were Michael Clark of Woods Cross High, ceramic functional ware; Tyler Young of Syracuse High, sculpture/three-dimensional work; Mason Charlesworth of Bountiful High, commercial art; Bobby Asay of Viewmont High, two-dimensional original work; Alexis Rausch of Viewmont High, two-dimensional copy work; and Mackenzie Turner of Clearfield High, photography.
Olivia Stevens of Fairfield Junior High School took first place in the junior high division of the competition, with Heather Shelley of Mueller Park Junior High in second place, and Anne Nish of Millcreek Junior High in third place.
The show was juried by Lester B. Lee of Clarkston, an artist and retired art teacher from Davis School District.
The exhibit continues 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays, through May 6. Works by several of Davis School District's art educators are on display in the art center's North Gallery.
