Pennywise the Clown -- In the 1990 movie "It," the television adaptation of Stephen King's tale of horror, a group of kids are tormented by a clown demon. Pennywise beckons them to join him in the sewer: "We all float down here."
"Poltergeist" clown doll -- The movie series that started in 1982 brought tales of a family being threatened by ghosts -- and also featured an eerie combination of dolls. A young boy's clown doll comes to life and attacks him.
Insane Clown Posse -- Members of this hard-core rap group deck themselves out in clown paint. Their fans call themselves Juggalos and brandish the clown paint, too. Utah classifies the fan group as a gang.
Krusty the Clown -- While not scary, Krusty the Clown has been exhibiting a miserable clown life for 20-plus years on "The Simpsons." He's a gambling, hard-drinking, aggressive entertainer who remains on children's television only to sell more merchandise.
The Joker -- The nemesis of Batman has seen many revivals, ranging from cartoon versions to Jack Nicholson as a gangster who takes over a town after falling in a vat of acid. Heath Ledger took the villain into Oscar-winning territory as a psychopath whose mission is to create anarchy in the streets of Gotham City.
