Syracuse would like to create the image of an outdoors community, and city planners think a yearly outdoor expo could do just that.
Officials from the Community and Economic Development Department had been talking about initiating an outdoor expo, beginning in 2012, which will bring people to the city.
The event would be held in May, just before Memorial Day, according to Kent Anderson, city planner.
Anderson outlined some possibilities associated with the expo at a recent city council work session.
He suggested the event could be a hybrid between a show for sportsmen and a show for rock enthusiasts.
He talked about staging events at three separate locations in the city with everything from a fishing competition to animal viewing and cooking demonstrations and a showcase for outdoor equipment.
His initial outline of activities created some enthusiasm among council members.
"I'm excited. I think it has great potential," Councilman Alan Clark said of the expo.
