Glider pilots love Utah for its combination of rocky cliffs and cool breezes

MOUNTAIN GREEN — Even on a beautiful day with bluebird skies, gliding is not a peaceful sport.

“It’s more like getting in a 50-gallon drum and rolling it down a flight of stairs,” said Lynn Alley, chief flight instructor for the Utah Soaring Association, a chapter of the Soaring Society of America.

Utah is one of the premier soaring areas in the world, said Alley, of Bountiful. The Morgan County Airport in Mountain Green is especially good for soaring in sailplanes because of a combination of nearby rocky cliffs and cool breezes.

Move prison and replace it with shopping centers, homes? Phooey

Looking back over dozens of years spent paying close attention to the behavior of politicians, I plainly see why I am afflicted with such a sour attitude regarding “public service.” Our politicos service the public, all right, but said service is akin to that which attracts vice squads to massage parlors.

And while on the topic of prostitution, what’s all this about the Legislature wanting to move the Utah State Prison from Draper?

Apple trial not likely to bring dramatic changes in e-book prices

Apple went on trial this week to fight charges that it conspired with major book publishers to raise the price of e-books from $9.99 to $12.99 and $14.99 prior to the release of the original iPad in 2010. Whether Apple wins or loses, you’re unlikely to see much of a difference in e-book prices.

The days of $9.99 bestsellers are gone, but you may find deals on top titles by doing some comparison shopping of your own.

Move it, move it with real lemurs in Madagascar

What’s this lemur doing in my lap?

Well, not exactly in my lap, but close enough for me to wonder about its next move.

Boob-tube bingeing: It sounds so bad, but feels so good

When “Game of Thrones” star Peter Dinklage swung by “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart knew exactly where to start his interview about the HBO mega-hit.

“People are so obsessed with this program,” Stewart said. “I have people who work here, in this office, who disappear for days, on ‘Game of Thrones’ jags. And they are, they just come back with that, sort of, can’t wait ... ”

“Nerd glaze,” Dinklage cut in.

Pussy Riot and zombies coming out of the closet

Punk music is a dangerous game in some corners of the world, as detailed in the revealing HBO documentary “Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer.”

Directed by Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin, and assembled rapidly after a six-month shoot, “Pussy Riot” presents as full a portrait as we’ve seen of the three balaclava-wearing young women arrested and imprisoned following their protest performance at a Moscow cathedral last year.

Fat daddy, big daddy among Father’s Day gifts

Father’s Day, June 16, is closing in, but you still have time to consider these titles as possible gifts for the dads in your life.

“Dad Is Fat” by Jim Gaffigan (Crown, $25, 288 pages): The standup comic brings hilarious insight to his life with five young children in the house. In the foreword, he tells them, “Given how attractive and fertile your mother is, there may be more of you by the time you read this book. If you are reading this, I am probably dead.”

‘Tiger Baby’ Kim Wong Keltner strikes back

One of the most controversial titles of 2011 was “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” by Amy Chua, a Yale University law professor who has said her book was meant to be funny but was “misunderstood.”

Now comes “Tiger Babies Strike Back: How I Was Raised by a Tiger Mom but Could Not Be Turned to the Dark Side” by Kim Wong Keltner. It’s a witty yet poignant memoir that helps explain “Tiger Mom syndrome” and explores cultural differences and stereotypes (William Morrow, $13.99, 272 pages).

Toilet-training children gets easier with a little help from a sibling

I’m sure that at some point during the last 10 years, I potty-trained my three older children. I know this because aside from the occasional puddle or really horrifying smudge on the bathroom tiles, all three of them are relatively good at using the toilet.

'Lizard King' fossil named for dead rock singer, poet

Jim Morrison was a king of sorts, at least in his own mind. The lead singer of the Doors sang in one cover song that he was “a king bee.” In another, he said, “I’m the crawlin’ king snake.”

But Morrison most famously wrote in a poem that he was “the Lizard King,” a name that stuck. So naturally, when a paleontologist who happens to be a Doors fan came across the fossil of a giant lizard, one of the largest ever to trod the planet, he named it Barbaturex morrisoni, after the enigmatic singer of the Doors.
