Is Social Security's money safe? As much as anything is

When I was a little kid, I had a buffalo nickel.

To keep it safe, I took it to the bank and asked the nice lady behind the counter to put it in my savings account.

She put my nickel in her drawer and stamped my passbook. After I left, she gave my nickel to the first guy who needed change for a quarter, I imagine. I never saw it again.

Fed plan for short-term fix brings long-term risks

WASHINGTON -- Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is balancing a short-term fix for the economy with a long-term gamble: His plan to buy Treasury bonds to fight high unemployment and super-low inflation now could ignite inflation later.
