BRIGHAM CITY -- Effective January 1, tipping fees at the Box Elder County landfill will increase to $29 per ton. The increase in revenue, however, will allow the county to provide additional services. Manager Gina Allen said a public convenience center will be built where the public can dispose of their waste in a different area than commercial haulers, increasing safety.
It will be closer to the office and people will not have to drive through so much "mud and ick." Trash will be pushed into bins in that area and will be moved by landfill personnel.
Allen said this area will cost approximately $230,000 to build. She wanted to dip into money that has been set aside as a contingency fund in her budget. However, the county's capital improvement committee reviewed the project and the landfill's budget and recommended an increase in tipping fees instead.
It has been seven to eight years since tipping fees have been increased, Allen said.
The landfill also will expand recycling opportunities, where people can bring paper, cardboard, plastic and possibly electronics. Allen said she hopes to have this all in place by summer 2011.
