Three separate fires burned through homes in Davis and Weber counties on Saturday, causing extensive damage in two and minor damage in one more.
South Ogden Fire Department responded to a fire near 40th Avenue and Palmer Way at 8:06 p.m. Saturday,
"We heard a loud bang coming from upstairs and started to smell smoke," said Daniel Wakley, who lives below the upstairs unit that burned. "We called 9-1-1, ran upstairs and kicked in the door to try and put out the fire on our own."
The fire was contained to the apartment's living room, according to South Ogden Fire Chief Tracy Bolt.
"While the cause is still under investigation, it appears there was an electrical problem that ignited the fire," said Bolt. "There seems to have been a small explosion on the main breaker box in the apartment."
Occupants of the apartment were not home when the fire broke out. No damage estimate was available.
Layton firefighters were called at 1:48 a.m. to a home near 900 North 3200 West. Battalion Chief Mike Adams said the two-story house was built in 1910. The fire appeared to have started in or near an add-on roof that adjoined the upstairs and spread to the living area on the second floor.
Fire damage was limited to the second floor, but there was heavy smoke and water damage on the first floor.
"We had firefighters fighting the blaze on the second floor, while others were carrying out Christmas gifts and furniture, trying to save valuables, on the first floor," Adams said.
Adams said he was uncertain how many people lived in the house. There were no injuries and he estimated damage at $200,000.
Adams said 22 firefighters responded and remained on the scene until 5:30 a.m.
Investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing.
At 3:22 p.m. fire broke out inside a four-plex at 451 North 400 East in Bountiful, according to Bountiful Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Bassett.
"When we arrived there were flames coming out of the condominium's back window," said Bassett. "We were able to quickly and safely evacuate everyone in the three neighboring units."
Two fire engines responded to the fire that caused an estimated $200,000 in damage, according to Bassett.
"Besides the middle unit in the building, everyone else was able to get back in their homes this evening," said Bassett. "The woman who lived in the condo that was most affected is staying with local family this evening."
