Study: Gun ownership, conservatism contribute to Utah’s high suicide rate

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s dubious distinction as one of the leading states for suicide could be linked to its high rate of gun ownership and political conservatism, according to a newly released study.

The study was authored by Augustine J. Kposowa, a sociology professor at the University of California-Riverside.

Kposowa calculated for each state the overall suicide rate, percentage of households with firearms and percentage of votes cast for President George W. Bush in the 2000 election.

Garcia enters guilty plea in Clearfield party shooting

FARMINGTON — An 18-year-old who shot another man in January has entered guilty pleas to reduced charges.

Daniel Alonso Garcia, of Clearfield, pleaded guilty Monday to second-degree felony discharge of a firearm in the direction of a person, second-degree felony aggravated assault with serious bodily injury and third-degree felony riot with a weapon.

Sentencing is set for July 30 before Judge Michael G. Allphin. Garcia could receive terms of 1 to 15 years in Utah State Prison on each of the second-degree felonies.

FARMINGTON — A 31-year-old Layton man realized after he was arrested that firing a gun at a party to end a quarrel was not a wise decision.

Reuben Samuel Carrasco is charged with aggravated assault, a third-degree felony; possession of drug paraphernalia, a class A misdemeanor; discharge of a firearm, a class B misdemeanor; and intoxication, a class C misdemeanor.

Ogden police arrest burglary suspects after finding stolen property

OGDEN — Police are investigating a pair of suspects arrested for burglary, including the theft of eight firearms.

Ogden police arrested Christopher McAfee, 19, and Ruben Rodriguez, 20, Monday after their yellow SUV was stopped because the vehicle matched the description of one leaving the scene of a burglary in the 1300 block of Liberty Avenue.

“It was excellent work by all of the officers involved, for being inquisitive, as well as their observational skills,” Police Lt. Scott Conley said.

Local author will share tricks for research

BRIGHAM CITY — A Utah author will speak in Brigham City about the research tricks he has learned from researching the West.

Michael Zimmer, who has published eight novels, will speak 7 p.m. March 20 at Brigham City Library, 26 E. Forest St.

Zimmer will cover a wide range of topics, such as starting a fire with flint and steel and common misconceptions about Old West firearms, with an emphasis on avoiding familiar movie stereotypes.

FARMINGTON -- Mayor Scott Harbertson and Nicole Millheim, wife of city manager Dave Millheim, have been honored for their marksmanship after a firearms demonstration and competition for city officials and their spouses hosted by the Farmington Police Department.

House passes bill to limit disorderly conduct for open carry

SALT LAKE CITY — A local lawmaker’s bill to limit the ability of local police to charge a person with disorderly conduct if they are openly carrying a weapon has passed the House.

The House voted 49-21 on Tuesday afternoon to move House Bill 49, sponsored by Rep. Paul Ray, R-Clinton, to the Senate. The vote came after almost an hour of debate about the right to carry guns and whether the new provision would take away a key law enforcement tool.

Ray insists the bill is necessary to clarify the kind of behavior that needs to happen for a person carrying a weapon to be charged with disorderly conduct.
