CLINTON — Firefighters not only had to battle with single-digit temperatures, but with a buried fire hydrant, propane tanks and .22-caliber rifle shells at a house fire early Wednesday morning.

SYRACUSE — A policeman noticing flames coming out of a chimney saved a house from burning down, fire officials said.

Two firefighters wounded by a gunman who set his upstate New York house ablaze and killed two of their colleagues in an ambush with weapons he wasn’t allowed to own were on the mend Wednesday and said they were thankful for the support they’ve received.

WEBSTER, N.Y. -- A man who set his house on fire then lured firefighters to their deaths in a blaze of flames and bullets had attracted little attention since he got out of prison in the 1990s for killing his grandmother, authorities said.

BOUNTIFUL — Fire crews are on the scene of a blaze at a home at 3013 S. 100 West in Bountiful. At least a half-dozen South Davis Metro Fire units are at the home.

LAYTON — City officials have awarded the bid for the third phase of a firefighter training facility project in this community.

The city council recently voted unanimously to bid the construction of a training facility truck bay building at approximately 1890 N. Fort Lane to Patriot Construction LCC for $306,946.

The new building is expected to cost between $340,000 and $350,000 when completed, Chief Kevin Ward said, after all costs are factored into the project. Patriot is the same contractor awarded the bid to install infrastructure on the site.
