Dying winds, high-moisture vegetation help halt blaze

(ERIN HOOLEY/Standard-Examiner) A helicopter carries water over a wildfire burning 20 miles north of Promontory Point in Maple Canyon on Thursday. The fire was reported at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday after lightning hit the area and grew to 5,000 acres by Thursday afternoon. One thing that helped in fighting the blaze was the decision some time ago to plant what Jason Curry, public information officer with the Utah Division of Forestry, calls “vegetative fire breaks,” or plants with a high moisture content. “The fire really slows down when it hits those plants.”
