Honor Earth Day -- as well as your body -- with these workouts

Earth Day has become more than a day where Americans clean parks and plant trees or flowers.

The American Council on Exercise is using it as a day to promote outdoor activity.

They are using it as a day to encourage people to trade the treadmill for a walk in the park or the weight bench for an outdoor yoga class.

Here are five workouts they are suggesting for Earth Day, which is today, April 22.

Fitness trainer does not let past tragedy slow him down

NORTH OGDEN — Many lives have been touched by the ripple effect of connection and compassion that began the instant a drunken driver’s car crushed the legs of young Sidney Reeves and killed his girlfriend almost a quarter-century ago.

Research continues to show that many adolescents have poor eating habits and decreased physical activity. To help, the Davis County Health Department is offering two free workshop series called BodyWorks to help parents and caregivers teach youngsters how to eat right and exercise, habits that will last a lifetime, says Dr. Jonelle Rowe, senior medical adviser for adolescent women’s health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This Standard-Examiner file photo from 2000 shows youngsters doing leg lift exercises at a Lady Fitness class in Layton.

Want a fitter family? BodyWorks classes might help

CLEARFIELD — The health, weight, eating behaviors, physical activity — or the lack of it — and the body image of Utah’s youths are growing concerns for Davis County Health Department officials.

In response, the department is offering two free BodyWorks program workshops.

Bod bonding: Layton mother and son get ripped together

LAYTON -- With the marks of carrying five kids and the lines of 44 years of age on her body, Brenda Ward wasn't sure she wanted to wear a bikini in front of judges and spectators. But she'd seen the changes in herself since getting fit with a personal trainer and wondered about the possibilities.

But it wasn't until one of her five kids, Brady Ward, agreed to sign up for a bodybuilding competition with her that the Top of Utah woman decided that competing in the figure portion of the National Physique Committee Utah Open and Ironman Natural Bodybuilding Figure Bikini Physique Championships could be a reality.

"I've kind of always wanted to do a competition but never had the courage," said Brenda, who works at the front desk of the Ogden Athletic Club. "This year I was chatting with my family saying I wanted to try for this competition, so my son said, 'I'll do it with you if you want to do it.' "

HOW TO: Obtain an online trainer

More people are turning to online personal trainers for nutrition and fitness guidance in their own homes. To make sure you're getting a qualified adviser, follow these tips from Amir Hosseinpour, senior vice president of product strategy for FitOrbit, an online training site:

Use your favorite search engine. Look up "online personal training" to find individual trainers' sites and sites with a large selection of staffers. That's the starting point for comparing services and prices.

"Given the large number of hours American adults watch TV," they wrote, "we suggest that TV commercial stepping is one potential approach for reducing sedentary behavior and increasing physical activity."

Burn calories during commercial break

Fitness experts are always telling us that incorporating movement into our day is a good way to burn calories. But is it effective?

A study finds that walking in place during commercials while watching TV actually provides a pretty good workout.

Researchers from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville studied a group of 23 men and women ages 18 to 65 under a number of conditions to see how many calories they burned. The study participants also represented a wide range of weights, from normal to obese.

HOW TO: Avoid ineffective workouts

Almost any exercise is good exercise.

That said, some people waste time on routines that aren't best for reaching their goals, trainers say.

Here are general tips from Shaun Knight, a certified athletic trainer in Virginia Beach, Va.:

* Think about variety, not just time. Keeping your body guessing is the best way to torch calories. "If you ride an exercise bike at the same level for an hour, it may not be beneficial -- especially given the time you're putting in," Knight says. "Your body will get used to it and start to think it's easy."

Obamas' trainer: Your health is your wealth

As the longtime personal trainer for President Barack Obama and the first family, Cornell McClellan deserves some props for Michelle's famously toned arms.

Gold's raising money for Ogden officers

OGDEN -- Gold's Gym in downtown Ogden is raising funds for the Ogden police officers who were involved in last week's deadly shooting and their families.

Fitness instructors at the gym at 2261 Kiesel Ave. will accept money donations during all classes today. All group classes will be free, but there will be a $10 suggested donation to participate in the 12:30 p.m. Zumba-a-thon dance class. Attendees today do not have to be gym members.

HOW TO: Avoid unsatisfying snack foods

A low-calorie snack can backfire if it doesn't fill you up, nutritionists say.

"It's more important to choose something that will satisfy longer than to go for a snack simply because it may be lower in calories, which could leave a person looking for another snack an hour later," says Crystal Witte, a registered dietitian with the Riverside Wellness & Fitness Center in Newport News, Va.

Some tips:

Gym Pact app an incentive to keep resolution

If, in New Years past, a steadfast resolution to get your butt to the gym has resulted in your butt remaining steadfastly planted on your couch, it may be time to introduce your butt to hyperbolic discounting.

Hyperbolic discounting is not a fitness trend or diet plan or mail-order device that systematically smoothes cellulite while you sleep.

It's an economic principle.
