Commission to consider 13 bids for flood-control work in Layton

FARMINGTON — A diversion project to control high flows in the Kays Creek channel and prevent potential flooding of east Layton homes has drawn more than a dozen bids for the work.

Anyone dreaming of a sunny winter break in Hawaii this week can forget it: Gov. Neil Abercrombie has declared a disaster on the islands of Kauai and Oahu after days of relentless rain caused flooding, mudslides, waterspouts, hail and dangerously high surf.

Families flee as floods swamp Australia's southeast

SYDNEY -- There was good news Tuesday for Wagga Wagga, the city in southeast Australia that had braced for its worst flooding in 159 years.

The swollen Murrumbidgee River peaked below the height of the New South Wales farming town's protective levee.

The 11-meter defenses held steady as the river rose to 10.56 meters, below the record set in 1853 and below the level in 1974 when the last big flood hit town.

But the 9,000 people ordered out of their homes after a week of record-breaking rain will not be allowed back until officials give the all-clear.

Survivor of 1961 Utah flash flood recalls tragedy

ST. GEORGE -- Somewhere beneath the waters of the Virgin River -- perhaps even of Lake Mead more than 100 miles downstream -- lie the remains of two Boy Scouts killed 50 years ago in a flash flood that swept through the Zion National Park Narrows.

A skull fragment recovered from the river five years ago and believed to be from one of the flood victims is evidence of the passage of time since the deadly incident. Even now, the memory of that day in September 1961 doesn't rest easily for one of the survivors of the ill-fated trek undertaken by a wilderness expedition group called Socotwa.

Weber County requests flood repair funding

SALT LAKE CITY -- Weber County officials are asking the state to provide $750,000 to help deal with the impact of flooding last year in the Ogden Bay Waterfowl Management Area.

The request is targeted at managing the flow of water from the Weber River on state land into the bay following significant damage caused by flooding last May.

The request was aired Monday morning before the Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environmental Quality Appropriations Subcommittee, which is expected to consider the request in coming days as it develops a list of priorities to forward to the Executive Appropriations Committee.

Flooding forces I-15 closure in Box Elder County

PLYMOUTH -- Flooding has forced the closure Saturday afternoon of the northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 15 near Plymouth in Box Elder County.

The closure began about 12:45 p.m. and crews are on the scene attempting to clear water from the roadway, said officials with the Box Elder County Dispatch Center. Traffic is being rerouted along State Road 13. Union Pacific Railroad has also halted train traffic because of water across tracks in the Riverside area.
