Flu season goes out unnoticed

The 2011-2012 flu season seems to be in its final weeks, but it's hard to tell for sure, because, like winter itself this year, it barely happened.

Weber resident tests positive for unusual swine flu strain

OGDEN — A Weber County resident has tested positive for an unusual strain of swine flu that has hospitalized three people in the U.S. and is not included in this year’s vaccination.

The virus has been identified in isolated cases across the nation, including in West Virginia, Maine, Iowa, Pennsylvania and Indiana. The Weber County resident was not hospitalized and is recovering at home.

The virus, A/H3N2v, was confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Utah Department of Health. The strain is genetically similar to those which circulate in pigs, said Weber-Morgan Health Department Director Gary House.

Flu bug gains steam, but it's not too late to get vaccinated

Influenza has picked up over the last week across the state, but health officials say it's still not too late to get vaccinated.

According to Weber-Morgan Health Department, the state saw an increase in the number of influenza type A cases beginning the first week of March. In Weber County, 69 percent of those cases have been H1N1, which is covered by this year's vaccine.

"We're not seeing huge numbers, but last month the activity was considered minimal, and this past week we've hit the low to moderate level," said Claudia Price, Weber-Morgan Health Department director of nursing.

Communicable disease on the rise in Davis County

CLEARFIELD -- With chlamydia at the top of the list, sexually transmitted diseases continue to push the reported number of communicable diseases upward in Davis County.

That was the news shared with the Davis County Board of Health, ironically on Valentine's Day.

In 2011, the health department received 1,369 disease reports, up 9 percent from the 2010 report of 1,256 cases, said Brian Hatch, director of the county health department's communicable disease and epidemiology division.

HOW TO: Best guard against the flu

Wash your hands often and get an annual flu vaccine -- those are the best ways to avoid getting sick, yes, but not the only ways.

"There's an entire arsenal of tools and actions you can use to fight off this virus," says Dr. William Berg, director of the public health department in Hampton, Va.

Such as:

Stop touching your eyes, nose and mouth. You're not just at risk if somebody coughs or sneezes near you. Viruses can live on many surfaces, and you can easily infect yourself by touching one and then a mucus membrane.

Avian flu breakthrough raises question of potential risk

MILWAUKEE -- A University of Wisconsin-Madison scientist who is an expert on the avian flu virus is under federal scrutiny because of concerns his new research may fall into the wrong hands.

WSU prof says elderberry can help fight flu

OGDEN -- Flu season is upon us, and while washing your hands and getting the vaccine are important preventions, a Weber State University botanist recommends an additional way to defend yourself from getting sick.

Stephen L. Clark, a WSU professor of botany, said he learned the power of elderberry during one of his many trips to remote areas of the world.

"I study how people use plants and have spent time on five different continents," Clark said. "I've been to some of the most remote places, living among these people and learning their way of life. During one of these trips, I learned about European elderberry and the effects it has on influenza A, B and avian influenza."

No insurance? Your flu shot may be free

OGDEN -- Flu shots will be offered from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Unitarian Universalist Church of Ogden, 705 23rd St.

In addition, adults without insurance will be given free immunizations.

The Community Nursing Services clinic is provided through a grant from the Ralph Nye Foundation and the Utah Medical Association.

(NICK SHORT/Standard-Examiner) Area health officials say there's plenty of flu vaccines available, and even four to choose from. Now is the time to get vaccinated, as most people wait until October to get protected, officials say.

Health officials: Lots of flu vaccine on hand

OGDEN -- It's impossible to predict how influenza is going behave, but public health officials are hoping this year's vaccine availability will produce a mild year for the contagion.

More available flu shots give hope for mild flu season

WASHINGTON -- With at least 170 million doses of flu vaccine headed to clinics and pharmacies, including two options for the squeamish and a new super shot for the elderly, public health officials are hoping they'll be able to immunize more than half of all Americans this season.

CLEARFIELD -- Davis County Health officials are reminding residents that the easiest, most reliable way to prevent the spread of flu is to be vaccinated against it.
