Monthly food drop at Elim Lutheran Church canceled

OGDEN — Families that have been relying on Fishes and Loaves, an outside food drop, once a month for three years at Elim Lutheran Church received their last help Thursday.

Facing huge deficit, N. Utah food bank ends rent-assistance program

OGDEN — The economic struggles of Top of Utah residents are translating into hard times for the Joyce Hansen Hall Food Bank.

At the end of March, the food bank disbanded a rent-assistance program that had served area residents for more than a decade.

“We’re running at a huge deficit right now,” said Northern Utah Catholic Community Services Director Marcie Valdez. “It was a difficult, difficult decision. Every day, 20 to 30 people come in looking for housing. … It does leave a huge gap in the community.”

Food drop goes on, despite weather

OGDEN — Approximately 90 families needing food braved the snowstorm this week to line up for the Utah Food Bank’s mobile food drop, hosted by Fishes & Loaves at Elim Lutheran Church in Ogden.

Nonprofits: The holidays are over, but charity is still in season

OGDEN — The holidays are over, but those associated with area nonprofit agencies hope the spirit of giving will hang around a little longer.

“The client need does not diminish after the holidays are over,” said Karina Martin, volunteer coordinator for Catholic Community Services of Ogden and the Joyce Hansen Hall Food Bank. “We’re still looking at 2,300 households getting food here each month.”

Food bank grateful for record outpouring of donations

OGDEN — More than 1,800 families will receive a holiday food and gift basket, thanks to a large contribution from several generous donors.

At the Catholic Community Services Joyce Hansen Hall Food Bank on Wednesday morning, donors and volunteers busily packed items, including 21,000 eggs, 7,000 pieces of fresh fruit, turkey, ham, stuffing, Jell-O, butter, peanut butter, tuna, yams and even pet food. The total cost of the donated items came to nearly $30,000, a record high, according to officials involved in the event.

Homeless, struggling students get aid at high school's food pantry

KAYSVILLE — Anne Shumway discovered getting homework done in a motel room is difficult at best.

“It sucks being homeless,” the 18-year-old high school senior said. “I really did not think homeless was an actual problem. You don’t see them, really.”

Donate holiday food through Dec. 15
