Prep football: Titans, Mustangs prep for semifinals

Two tripleheaders will generate a heavy dose of football playoff fervor on Thursday and Friday at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Region 1 champion Syracuse and Region 5 champion Mountain Crest will carry the Top of Utah banner in the state 5-A and 4-A semifinals, respectively.

Falcons stay unbeaten

ATLANTA — Michael Turner finally found some room to run in the second half. It was just in time for the NFL’s last unbeaten team.

Turner had a tiebreaking 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, Matt Bryant kicked four field goals and the Atlanta Falcons beat the Dallas Cowboys 19-13 on Sunday night to protect their perfect record.

Turner had 20 carries for 102 yards and Matt Ryan had a season-high 342 yards passing for the Falcons (8-0), who took their first lead with 14:16 left in the game.

Prep football: Trojans fight to bitter end, but fall in 3-A quarters

SPANISH FORK — The Trojans gave everything they had against a much bigger school. But in the end, Spanish Fork’s depth proved too much as it knocked Morgan out of the state 3A football playoffs with a 33-23 win on Friday night.

Morgan mounted a furious fourth quarter comeback after falling behind 33-10. The Trojans started the quarter with a nine-play, 62-yard drive that culminated in a three-yard scoring run by quarterback Ben Saunders.

Prep football: Titans move into semis, but lose QB

SYRACUSE — The Syracuse Titans are on their way to the state 5-A semifinals for the second year in a row, but the victory came at a costly price.

Syracuse lost its starting quarterback, Brock Anderson, to a likely torn Achilles tendon late in the fourth quarter, which put a damper on a thrilling 31-24 victory by the Titans over a potent Alta squad that Syracuse also eliminated last year.

Prep football: Knights can't find offense as Beetdiggers roll into 5-A semis

SANDY — Jordan’s offensive line was too much for Northridge as the Beetdiggers racked up 360 rushing yards en route to a 49-13 thumping of the Knights at Sayers Field on Friday.

The loss — Northridge’s third of the season — ends a storybook season that coach Erik Thompson said few predicted.

Prep football: Bees falter in quarterfinal stinger

BRIGHAM CITY — While state 4-A powers Mountain Crest and Timpview flexed their muscles on Friday in the quarterfinal round of the state football playoffs, highly touted East had its hands full with Box Elder Bees.

The Leopards eliminated the Bees from the playoffs with a 21-7 victory, but the powerful East squad needed a late pick-six to finish off the Region 5 team and send their loyal fans home for the season.

Prep football: Preator, Wolves don't agree with underdog status

PLAIN CITY — Slim and none.

To those outside the Fremont community, that is the chance people are giving the Silver Wolves versus Region 4 co-champion Bingham in today’s state 5-A quarterfinals.

After starting the season 0-6 — Fremont was awarded a forfeit victory over East after the Leopards were penalized for using ineligible players in the Week 4 whitewash — the Silver Wolves (4-6 overall) have won two straight and three of four while allowing only 17 points with one shutout.

Colter Smith

Prep notes: Ben Lomond alum earns MIAA honors

Perseverance is paying off for Ben Lomond alumnus Colter Smith.

Smith, starting quarterback at the University of Central Missouri, recently was named MIAA player of the week for his performance in a big 47-17 win over Central Oklahoma.

Smith was 21 of 35 for 329 yards and three touchdowns as the Mules beat Central Oklahoma 47-17 to improve to 5-2 on the season.

Smith nears perfection in Glendale

GLENDALE, Ariz. — On an almost perfect Monday night for Alex Smith, the San Francisco 49ers flexed their NFC West dominance with a 24-3 flattening of the Arizona Cardinals.

Smith completed 18 of 19 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns — two to Michael Crabtree and one to Randy Moss — to help San Francisco (6-2) open a two-game lead in the division and send Arizona (4-4) to its fourth straight lost.

Smith’s only incompletion was dropped by a wide-open receiver.

Smith was 14 of 15 for 146 yards and two touchdowns, both to Crabtree, as the 49ers built a 17-0 halftime lead.

Area prep football teams will become road warriors

Top of Utah football teams hoping to find state success will, for the most part, be faced with road games the rest of the way in the 2012 postseason.

Of the 11 teams that advanced, only four — Syracuse, Mountain Crest, Woods Cross and Box Elder — will be at home this week.

Region 1 champion Syracuse whipped Viewmont and will host Alta at 5 p.m. on Friday afternoon in the 5-A second-round bracket.

Northridge, Davis and Fremont will all play for spots in the quarterfinals away from their home field.

In the 4-A bracket, East and Timpview were forced by the UHSAA to earn their playoff wins on the road due to player infractions, and will travel north.

Prep football: Cook, Porter lead Darts to playoff romp

KEARNS — There was a concern Davis would have a hard time turning around for Saturday’s state 5-A playoff matchup at Kearns after playing Layton on Tuesday.

Those concerns were immediately dismissed following the Darts 38-0 win over the Cougars as Davis gathered some much needed momentum looking forward to Lone Peak in the next round.

Prep football: Undersized Knights breeze past Granger into 5-A quarterfinals

LAYTON — With 24 Granger players listed at over 220 pounds compared to only four for Northridge, on paper the Knights were physically overmatched.

In practice, nothing could be further from the truth.

Syracuse High’s Jake Garver stiff-arms Viewmont defensive back Mitch Dalley for extra yards during the first round of the state 5-A playoffs in Syracuse on Friday. The Titans defeated the Vikings 54-0.

Prep football: Titans thump Vikings, move to 5-A quarters

SYRACUSE — Even with an undefeated record, the Titans are not perfect.

In its first game in two weeks, Region 1 champion Syracuse High had two turnovers, missed two PAT kicks and committed too many penalties Friday.

Prep football: Bees, Trojans, Bears all move on in playoffs

SPANISH FORK — Worries that the Box Elder Bees might not be ready for the state 4-A football playoffs were unfounded.

The Bees shut down Region 8 runner-up Maple Mountain 20-0 to open playoff action on Friday afternoon.
