Fourth festivities keep things poppin’

If you’re looking for a taste of not just snow cones, but of Utah’s small-town friendliness, this year’s menu for July 4 has plenty of selections.

Early-morning pancakes, cotton candy, marching bands and fireworks will be the stars at communities across Northern Utah as Utahns step out for Independence Day activities.

Take, for instance, Riverdale’s Old Glory Days. In addition to the familiar baby contest and donut-eating contests, new this year will be that benchmark of childhood, the pinewood derby — “for kids of all ages,” said event organizer Colleen Winget.

Davis plans holiday celebrations

The lack of rain may be wreaking havoc on people’s summer plans in firework-restricted areas, but there certainly is not a lack of city fireworks events, with many towns in Davis County celebrating Independence Day and Pioneer Day with large displays.

While the summer skies come alive with fireworks, the month of July will be filled with activities for residents to enjoy including breakfasts, 5K runs, parades, concerts, and carnivals.

New this year is an unprecedented entry in Bountiful City’s Handcart Day parade on Friday, July 20. More than 2,000 young men from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Utah will be dressed in costumes, telling the story of 2,000 young stripling warriors described in the Book of Mormon.
