Family gives delivery men a surprise for saving their boy

CLINTON -- Kamden LaRose made a special delivery to two RC Willey delivery associates who showed up at his house thinking they were delivering an order.

"Hi, let's play," the 4-year-old boy shouted as he opened the door after the bell rang Tuesday.

Lee Parry and Fred Naeata thought they were bringing slats for a bed they had delivered at the LaRose home in September. They said they didn't recognize the name when they saw the order slip, but knew where they were when they pulled into the cul-de-sac.

Event today, Saturday all about spas, updates

OGDEN -- Home improvement is the theme for the 2011 Fall Home Show & Spa Expo sponsored by the Standard-Examiner.

"A lot of people are rethinking their homes instead of buying a brand-new home," said event coordinator Jennifer Thorpe.

Entrepreneurs bring Ikea products to buyers

ST. LOUIS -- One Saturday each month, Emily and Mark Schmitz make a road trip to Ikea.

The south St. Louis County couple usually hit the road around 3 a.m. Once they get to the Bolingbrook, Ill., store, they split up to be more efficient. The Schmitzes end up spending about eight hours at the store, including two hours loading up their truck and trailer.

"We'll check out with anywhere from 14 to 18 carts," Emily Schmitz said. "They'll often open a special line for us."

But the furnishings don't end up in their living room. In the following days, they divvy up items to customers who pay the couple to make the Ikea run.

Furniture designer Maya Khaira's dog inspired a new line of dog products, Roxie Doggie.

Dining designed for dogs

Furniture designer Maya Khaira loves her dog, a chocolate Lab mix named Roxie. But she didn't love some of the stuff that comes with living with a pet -- such as ugly dog bowls that clashed with her decor.

"For a person like me who's into midcentury modern design, the available dog things didn't fit with my home," Khaira said. They were either mass-produced plastic or too "precious and cute," she said.

"I couldn't find what I wanted, so I designed it myself."
