Tax amendment defeated by narrow House vote

SALT LAKE CITY -- A local lawmaker's bid to dedicate revenues generated by taxes on natural resources to a trust fund, rather than the general fund, was defeated in the House by a 39-36 count Monday.

Sponsored by Rep. Jim Nielson, R-Bountiful, HB210 would have mandated the immediate redirection of some of the tax generated by gas, oil and mining tax revenues into the existing state trust fund.

The trust fund is to prepare for the future, when natural resources may no longer generate revenue for a given community.

Gas station in Plain City to become a Maverik

PLAIN CITY — The Chevron station will soon become a Maverik store instead and the fast-food restaurant Boone’s will no longer exist, says a planning commissioner.

Once the gas station/store becomes a Maverik, it will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, says Planning Commissioner Blake Neil.

He said there is nothing in city ordinances that prevent it from operating at all hours.

“Maverik’s got a real good presence, but some are not too excited to lose Boone’s,” said Mayor Jay Jenkins.

Judge rejects gov't bid to delay sage grouse suit

BILLINGS, Mont. -- A federal judge has rejected the government's attempt to delay a lawsuit seeking protections for imperiled sage grouse across the West in a case with sweeping implications for grazing, oil and gas drilling, and residential construction.

With the order from Judge B. Lynn Winmill in Idaho, the 11-state sage grouse case is shaping up as an early test of an Obama administration proposal to settle endangered species claims on hundreds of plants and animals.

Among the most pivotal of those species is the greater sage grouse, a ground-dwelling game bird that has lost half of its once-vast range and also suffered from the deadly West Nile virus.
