GOP: Control of federal lands in Utah key to state's economy, education

SALT LAKE CITY — If Utah does not get control over federal lands within its borders, two local lawmakers worry, it could severely impact the state’s economy in the long run.

Oil and gas drilling recovers, but state collects little tax

A new report says Utah's oil and gas drilling activity has made a strong recovery since hitting a recession-induced low in 2009, but the state isn't collecting enough tax from the industry.

The report was prepared by Headwaters Economics, a nonprofit, independent research group based in Montana that aims to improve community development and land-management decisions in the West.

According to the report, natural gas production in Utah is at pre¬-recession highs, and oil production in the state is at its highest point in 20 years.

Ozone rule status quo for Rockies gas drilling

CHEYENNE, Wyo. -- Wyoming congressional leaders say they're glad the Obama administration has backed away from lowering the federal limit for ozone pollution, but environmentalists say it is stepping away from fixing the state's ozone problem.

(JIM URQUHART/The Associated Press) Environmental activist Tim DeChristopher is surrounded by media as he arrives to the Frank E. Moss Federal Courthouse in Salt Lake City on Tuesday. He was sentenced to two years in prison on federal charges for bidding up prices at an auction of land leases that he couldn't pay for.

DeChristopher gets 2 years in prison for thwarting oil and gas lease auction

SALT LAKE CITY -- A Utah environmental activist has been sentenced to two years in prison for derailing a 2008 government auction of oil and gas leases near two national parks.

Judge rejects gov't bid to delay sage grouse suit

BILLINGS, Mont. -- A federal judge has rejected the government's attempt to delay a lawsuit seeking protections for imperiled sage grouse across the West in a case with sweeping implications for grazing, oil and gas drilling, and residential construction.

With the order from Judge B. Lynn Winmill in Idaho, the 11-state sage grouse case is shaping up as an early test of an Obama administration proposal to settle endangered species claims on hundreds of plants and animals.

Among the most pivotal of those species is the greater sage grouse, a ground-dwelling game bird that has lost half of its once-vast range and also suffered from the deadly West Nile virus.

Group: Mule deer need to be considered when drilling

DENVER  -- A nonprofit conservation organization says better coordination is needed between state wildlife and land managers handling energy development and mule deer populations in the West.
