SALT LAKE CITY — Mormon church leaders have restated the faith's position on gay marriage to its members in Argentina, where the government is debating whether to legalize gay unions.
A letter issued by Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints President Thomas S. Monson says church doctrine is clear: Marriage is between one man and one woman.
Argentina's Senate is currently debating whether to approve either gay marriage or a civil union law. The House of Deputies already has approved gay marriage.
Monson's letter takes no position on the proposed legislation and calls for no political action by members.
In June 2008 a letter from Monson to California Mormons did call for members to give time and money to pass Proposition 8, a measure banning gay marriage in that state.
