SALT LAKE CITY — The definition of gender has stalled in a Senate committee the bill known as Aubree Jo’s Law, almost one year to the date after the bill’s namesake, 3-year-old Aubree Jo Anderson, died in a car accident.

Women in Utah less apt to own business

SALT LAKE CITY -- New census estimates show that women own nearly 25 percent of all businesses in Utah, the sixth-lowest rate in the country.

The estimates released Tuesday show Salt Lake County's rate of women-owned businesses is the lowest among the nation's 50 most populous counties.

Pam Okumara, program director for the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce Women's Business Center, said the numbers reflect the beliefs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Women are encouraged by church leaders to stay at home and raise families, and about 60 percent of the state's residents are Mormons.

Colleges debate asking applicants about sexuality, gender

More than 400 of the nation's 3,000 colleges use the Common Application to help high school students who want to apply to many schools at once.

This year, the application added an option for students to detail their religious beliefs. Now, Common Application members are debating the addition of questions about sexuality and gender expression.

The Common Application is a 35-year-old, nonprofit organization that provides a college admission application -- online and in print -- that students may submit to any of its 415 members. According to the organization's website, last year almost 2 million applications were submitted to Common App Online.
