Ghost town

A gas station sits empty in Woodside, Utah, in Emery County on July 27, 2012. The family that owns the 700-acre townsite has put it up for sale. They are seeking $3.9 million. Woodside once bustled with about 300 residents in the early 1900s when it was a water stop for steam engines. Now the town sits empty. (AP Photo/The Deseret News, Geoff Liesik)

Utah ghost town for sale

SALT LAKE CITY — The real estate listing reads like a Wild West exhibit: An old gold mine. A geyser. A supposed hideout of famed outlaws.

Bodie State Historic Park, pictured August 12, 2009, is a California gold-mining ghost town, where visitors can walk down the deserted streets of a town that once had a population of nearly 10,000 people. The town was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961, and in 1962 became Bodie State Historic Park. (Marc Martin/Los Angeles Times/MCT)

High gold prices breed new prospectors

BODIE, Calif. -- On a day when the price of gold soared above $1,700 an ounce, Jack Shipley drove past tourists strolling through this historic Eastern Sierra mining camp and up a rutted road to where a new breed of prospectors have set their sights.

The ghost town of Piedmont in Uinta County, Wyo., southeast of Evanston, began as a small railroad and timber town but started to decline when Union Pacific opened a new line that bypassed the town. Mormon pioneers Moses Byrne and Charles Guild helped settle the the town in 1867, Byrne building several charcoal kilns and Guild starting a ranch. Wendy Peterson is a descendant of Marie Cardon Guild, wife of Charles Guild, who spent time in Ogden. Her family owns the land and ghost town and still lives in the area. Once a hot spot: Charcoal kilns fueled Wyoming ghost town

Piedmont is a ghost town. The few remaining buildings, with empty windows and collapsing roofs, are surrounded by sagebrush. The town’s settlers are buried in small graveyards on the hills.
