Ogden artists step up to challenge and create Girl Scout-inspired art

When members of the Palette Club of Ogden were challenged to make Girl Scout-inspired art for the centennial of that scouting organization, Mary Wells happily stepped up to the plate ... of cookies.

Wells created a small book, folded accordion-style, called "Girl Scout Cookies on Parade."

Each of the Girl Scouts' famous cookies is painted on its own page, and the cookies received the royal treatment with their names carefully written in calligraphy.

Tagalongs are the South Ogden artist's favorite Girl Scout cookies -- not necessarily for painting, but for eating.

Girl Scouts brave cold to empathize with homeless

OGDEN -- Spending a night in a box was on 10th-grader Kiley Matthews' bucket list.

Now she can scratch that off.

She and about 17 other Girl Scouts spent Friday night sleeping outside in cardboard boxes just big enough for them, their blankets and animal-shaped pillows. The sleepover was meant to show them firsthand what it's like to be one of Utah's thousands of homeless. There were 14,351 people who were homeless throughout the state as of the annual head count in January.

A sweet treat: Girl Scouts send cookies to troops overseas

OGDEN — Some U.S. troops who might be tired of field rations are going to get a surprise treat, courtesy of some local Girl Scouts.

The Daisy Scout Troop 2439 of Ogden packed 900 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to send to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

When the girls sell cookies, they have the option of selling them to people or letting people give donations if they don’t want to eat the cookies, said Anne Anderson, a co-leader of the group. This is called the Gift of Caring.

Calories don't count if you close your eyes while you chew

Eleven years ago, I calculated that all the Girl Scout cookies sold in Utah would add 134 tons of lard to Utahns' collective butts.

That was based on 1.3 million boxes sold. From the pallet-loads friends are distributing this year (typical quote: "Really, my daughter sold every one!"), I have to assume the figure has increased.

Do not worry. This is not a broccoli-swinging, kale-slathered health rant. Quite the opposite.

Grants awarded to local agencies

Two Top of Utah nonprofits are among those to recently receive grants from the Daniels Fund. The Box Elder Community Pantry in Brigham City and Your Community Connection of Ogden were among several Utah nonprofit organizations serving youth, seniors, the disabled and the homeless to be among the recipients of $193,370 in grants.

Upset at camp closings, some Girl Scouts won't sell cookies

Upset that their leaders are hanging out For Sale signs at cherished campgrounds, some local Girl Scouts say they may ditch the annual cookie sale in protest.

Some Girl Scout cookies getting a name change

Would a Samoa by any other name taste as sweet?

That's the question area cookie lovers were facing when Girl Scout cookie sales began Saturday.

The Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri have switched bakeries after 20 years, from Little Brownie Bakers, a subsidiary of Keebler to ABC Bakers, a subsidiary of Interbake Foods. Those are the only two companies licensed to make official Girl Scout cookies, but each owns its recipes and cookie names.

So the cookies formerly known as Samoas, vanilla cookies coated in caramel, sprinkled with toasted coconut and laced with chocolate stripes, are now Caramel deLites.
