Does insanity run in families? It does in the case of the Brewsters in the classic screwball comedy "Arsenic and Old Lace," opening Thursday at Weber High School.
Mortimer Brewster's dotty old aunts have the best of intentions, but the poisoned bodies of lonely old men wind up buried in their cellar anyway. They are aided by Teddy Brewster, who firmly believes he is Teddy Roosevelt and is digging locks for the Panama Canal in the cellar.
"The two actors playing the Brewster sisters have really taken on the physical challenge of playing these old ladies," said Mark Daniels, theater teacher at the school. "They are great little actresses."
Daniels said the school is having professional wigs designed for the two sisters and is also bringing in a professional makeup artist to appropriately age the pair. Special makeup is also needed for the villain of the piece, Jonathan Brewster, who is horribly scarred as a result of botched plastic surgeries by his inebriated physician, Dr. Einstein.
The cast includes Emily Woods as Abby Brewster, Audrey Compass as Martha Brewster, Tucker Roberts as Mortimer Brewster, Seth Craven as Jonathan Brewster, Zach Ames as Teddy Brewster, Derek Olsen as the Rev. Dr. Harper, Brian Lofthouse as Officer Brophy, Taylor Robbins as Officer Klein, Rachel Saunders as Elaine Harper, Josh Norman as Mr. Gibbs, Cass Bindrup as Dr. Einstein, Drew Peterson as Officer O'Hara, Christian Rupp as Lieutenant Rooney and Lindsay Lawson as Mrs. Witherspoon.
