You can enjoy the special sight and sound of a waterfall right at home without worrying about constant maintenance, thanks to the popular pondless waterfall that operates with one switch and a filter that is good for years. They’re available in a range of sizes and prices to please any homeowner.

Pondless waterfalls reduce cost, maintenance

If you’re dreaming of a waterfall, you may be glad to know there is an option that costs less than most and is easier to maintain.

“Most people are doing pondless waterfalls. They are low maintenance. You get the sound but no maintenance. They’re also cheaper than a full-blown waterfall,” said Kody Thompson, owner of KBT Waterfalls in South Weber.

Thompson said a waterfall will increase the value and enjoyment of a home, but a waterfall with a pond also increases maintenance.

Hot tubs and spas are available in a wide range of styles and sizes. Most tubs purchased now are designed for four to six people, but smaller tubs are also popular with empty-nesters and those who want the therapeutic benefits of a hot tub in a small area.

For centuries people have sought the comfort of warm water to help them relax, and today more and more people are choosing to have their own hot tub or spa for relaxation and therapy.

“This is a great time of year to buy one,”says Justin Johnson of All American Spas on Washington Boulevard. One reason is that they are used more during the cooler months of the year, and you can get some super deals. There are the 2011 models left over from last year, he said, and there are also introductory offers on the 2012 models.

Chef’s kitchen reflects his travels, makes room for laughs

LOS ANGELES — Clifford A. Wright is an earnest culinary scholar who has worked at the Institute of Arab Studies and has written 14 books. His kitchen is a history of his travels. But over his sink hangs a Franklin Mint plate on which Larry, Curly and Moe, wearing chef’s jackets, are about to get to work on a turkey.

Wright takes food seriously, with a dash of Three Stooges demeanor.

A careful look around reveals charm and humor again and again. As he puts it: He is a scholar who writes for people who watch their happiness before their weight.

You can personalize your home with a stairway art gallery in the Paris-salon style (top-to-bottom of wall, disparate frames and types of art), using family photos or keepsakes, kids’ artwork, quality reproductions or favorite thrift-shop finds. Measuring your space and using the appropriate tools will make the job easy and professional-looking.

Don’t let wall hang-ups hang you up

We freeze when it comes to a few everyday details around our homes, such as hanging art and draperies. The thought of peppering the wall with nails from feeble attempts is a downer.

As for securing heavier objects — mirrors and cabinets — we often don’t do it ourselves because we’re afraid they’ll be crooked or come crashing down.

So we called on the pros to help us conquer these trip-up tasks. They showed us the correct way to measure and how high to hang the hardware.

Making sure your pet gets the proper nutrients and enough water can cut down on shedding and help keep your home cleaner. Waterless shampoos can help stretch the time between baths, so your dog’s skin doesn’t get too dry.

Healthy eating, care key for pets

OGDEN — To have a cleaner home and environment for your pet, what you feed it is important. Debbie Townsend, owner of the The Animal Park in Ogden, has found over the years what her pets’ diet is speaks to how healthy her animals are as well as how much cleaner her home can be with her pets.

She has found that for some dog breeds a raw food diet limits shedding and gives a shinier, healthier coat. Giving a pet lots of moisture in the form of water or supplementary oils is also vital. Even offering pets dehydrated foods can help, she said.

Thorough grooming and proper nutrition can go a long way in keeping your pet happy and healthy, and your home cleaner too. The Animal Park in Ogden offers a variety of services to make life a little easier for you and your best animal friend. Doggie daycare is a real boon if you usually leave your pet home alone for long days — the interaction with other dogs satisfies your pet’s craving for company, and the romping and playing burns off extra energy. Owner Debbie Townsend plans to add a training element later this year.

The Animal Park offers limitless services

OGDEN — Need a place to take your pet for the day? How about a thorough grooming? Organic treats or food? Look no further. Debbie Townsend can provide all that and more at The Animal Park.

Townsend loves animals and is always working to learn new things about how to make dogs and other pets healthier and happier.

She offers grooming, pet supplies, holistic and organic foods and supplements and doggie daycare.

Edible landscaping takes food plants beyond bounds of vegetable patch

Food plants have jumped the fence from the kitchen garden.

They’re making their way into the landscape, doing double duty as both food sources and things of beauty.

It’s a movement called edible landscaping, and there’s good reason for it, advocates say. Edible landscaping encourages and simplifies local food production, with all its health and environmental benefits.

OGDEN — Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have an expert come to your home and give you some landscaping ideas?

There are several landscape artists in the area, and many of them will be at the Spring Home & Garden Show this year to give tips and ideas to residents who may need some extra help in the yard.

Dave Andre, owner of Andrescapes in Layton, has plenty of ideas when it comes to rock landscaping. Andre said not only does rock add beauty to your yard, it never has to be replaced.

Want to plant a garden? Starting small, with the right soil in containers can produce a bountiful harvest in a manageable space. And remember, you can gather a wealth of information about plants, soil and insects through diagnostic clinics conducted by University of Utah Extension Services at the Ogden Botanical Gardens.

Gardens made simple

Planting a garden probably isn’t as hard as you think it is. Dorinda Jones, garden manager with Utah State University Extension Services, said those who start small, prepare the soil, plant at the right time and water properly will likely have a very productive and enjoyable garden.

Start small

The best advice Jones has for beginning gardeners is to start with a manageable space.

“Try to start in an area that’s not too big. People get so excited in the spring and clear a huge area and take out sod. They start tilling, weeds start popping up and they get discouraged. Weeds take over and they forget about the vegetables,” she said.

Jones recommends starting out by planting something easy, like radishes.

When your favorite leather chair starts looking old and worn, you don’t need to toss or donate it — just repair that chair. Tears and rips in leather and vinyl can be fixed, and recoloring is possible, too. Curt West, who owns Leather and Vinyl Doctor in South Ogden, says the work can be done in his shop or in your home for big repairs.

Leather and vinyl specialists come to you

OGDEN — Curt West has always enjoyed working with leather, so when the opportunity came up last year for him to buy a franchise of the Leather and Vinyl Doctor, he thought it would be a great thing, and it has been.

Since buying the franchise last summer, West has attended a special class where he has learned how to work with the different types of leather and vinyl used in furniture and cars. It’s somewhat different from working with shoes or other smaller leather items, which is what he did before.

West and his family have been working hard, learning the ins and outs of the leather upholstering business and have been pleased with the results. His business, at 772 E. 5500 South, in South Ogden, does in-house repairs, but they will also come to homes for big repair jobs.
