Farmington City Council mulls smoke-shop rules

FARMINGTON -- New guidelines and rules for a smoke shop in this community are in the works.

Members of the planning commission and staff recently discussed at length city guidelines for a smoke shop and are addressing a city ordinance for the shops, plus initiating research from surrounding communities to see how other cities regulate the businesses.

Earlier this month the commission held a public hearing on the issue and voted 7-0 to table the item, while addressing potential zones for the specific kind of business.

What place do party politics have in municipal elections?

SYRACUSE -- Party politics have no place in municipal elections if the common good of the community is to be served, says Syracuse Mayor Jamie Nagle.

"We all have skin in this game," Nagle said of communities at large.

But the leader of the Davis County Republican Party sees it differently, saying the party affiliation of those seeking an elected city office has its place, to the point that he encourages GOP members to seek that information before making their voting decision.

Public invited to redistricting talk

CLEARFIELD — At 6:30 p.m. today, several local politicians will discuss the effects of the Legislature’s redistricting efforts.

Among the planned speakers at the Clearfield American Legion Post, 345 Depot St., are state Sen. Jerry Stephenson, Reps. Curt Oda and Paul Ray and City Councilman Mark Shepherd. They also will answer general political questions from the audience after the discussion on redistricting.

WASHINGTON -- Ending a perilous stalemate, President Barack Obama and congressional leaders announced agreement Sunday night on an emergency deal to avoid to avert the nation's first-ever financial default. The arrangement would cut more than $2 trillion from federal spending over a decade.

LONDON  — British Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday called for an emergency session of parliament to brief lawmakers on the spreading phone hacking scandal, trying to gain control of a crisis that is threatening Rupert Murdoch's media empire, the upper echelons of London's police force and the country's leader himself.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Minnesota's leaders made a deal that will probably end the nation's longest state government shutdown in a decade, but they didn't really solve their budget problem. Instead, they just shuffled it down the road to be faced another day.

'Enough is enough,' Obama says, calling for deal

 

WASHINGTON — Amid new warnings and fresh signs of strain, President Barack Obama and congressional leaders are entering a perilous endgame in their debt limit standoff. The president, declaring "enough is enough," is demanding that budget negotiators find common ground by week's end.
