Davis libraries boosting technology, resources for users

FARMINGTON — As library patrons increasingly use electronic media to access information, Davis County Library is working to meet their demands.

Libraries have historically been a major source of knowledge, traditionally in the form of paper books. However, with the increased use of technology, libraries are beginning to expand their resources.

Davis County Library is working to enhance its technology assets by purchasing more e-books, offering online learning games and tools for children and providing access to online car repair manuals, genealogy databases and foreign language courses.

Northrop Grumman gives Davis schools $5,000 for math olympiad

SALT LAKE CITY -- Northrop Grumman Corp. recently provided grants worth a total of $6,500 to support science, technology, engineering and mathematics educational initiatives in area schools, including a science and math competition for students in grades 4-6.

Northrop Grumman awarded a $5,000 grant to the Davis School District for the annual Elementary Science and Math Olympiad, which provides hands-on opportunities for students to learn math and science concepts.

Northridge High gets funds for engineering, math, science

LAYTON -- Northridge High School is building a new stadium, and the competitors who will do battle there are still in the early construction phase.

Thanks to a $660,000 grant from the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Educational Partnership, Northridge will have extra money for its engineering, science and math departments. A good chunk of the cash is going to the newly formed robotics class.

HUD grant gives Davis County organizations a hand up

LAYTON -- Davis County is receiving $673,483 from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to support community development and produce more affordable housing.

The money has already been allocated by the Davis County Commission, with nine organizations receiving a portion of it.

LAYTON -- The Score Higher Utah Project, a program designed to help Utah high school students improve their ACT scores, was selected to receive a 2011 Smart Women Grant from Zions Bank.

Ogden School District gets hefty federal grant

OGDEN -- The Ogden School District has been selected for a GEAR UP grant of $799,100 for use in the next year to help low-income students prepare for post-secondary education.

The federal grant money is expected to continue coming for six additional years, according to a letter the Office of Legislation and Congress Affairs sent to Utah Rep. Rob Bishop and forwarded to the Ogden district.
