Getting through the hectic holiday season can be especially tough when you're grieving the loss of someone you love. How do get through the busy days ahead with Christmas cheer you may not be feeling?

That question and many more are addressed in a new book compiled by Brigham City native Gloria Horsley and her daughter Heidi Horsley. The book "Open to Hope: Inspirational Stories of Handling the Holidays After Loss" ($12.95) is a companion piece to their other new book "Open to Hope: Inspirational Stories of Healing After Loss" ($14.95).

North Ogden family grieves after Alexis' body ID'd

NORTH OGDEN -- Her family knew Alexis Rasmussen as a light that shines on even after her death.

Wade Reed, her uncle, described the 16-year-old's bright personality and smile, her beautiful green eyes and lovely personality. That's what her family will never forget about her, or fully recover from the loss of, he said.

Running for relief from grief

A new race event allows grieving parents to run the road together.

The Race For Grief 10K and 2K walk in Bountiful on Saturday is an awareness event for infant and pregnancy loss -- and a labor of love for Lora Erickson, race founder and professional running coach.

The 38-year-old Bountiful woman has been looking for a chance for 12 years to honor her daughter's short life. Doctors found Erickson had an "incompetent cervix" during the pregnancy, a medical condition in which the cervix dilates too early.

A war widow's grief, a mother's worry

CENTERVILLE, Wash. -- Even after a year, and more than a half-dozen memorial services, Barbie Coleman often feels like her husband is still alive. She pictures him returning to their house east of Yelm, Wash., telling fresh tales of life with his Special Forces team like he had so many times before.

"Always, in the back of my mind, I think he's coming home," said Barbie Coleman, who first began dating her husband at Goldendale High School in Klickitat County. "I just can't think of myself as a widow."

Master Sgt. Mark Coleman died May 2, 2010, at age 40. The leader of a 12-man team, Coleman in his last minutes of life ordered younger soldiers back to a safe distance as he located a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan.
