Law officers: Toy guns look like real thing, create danger

In the middle of the night, the suspect appeared to be an adult male — and the gun looked real.

“It was the most intense, scariest situation I’ve ever been in,” said Davis County Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Benedict.

SEATTLE -- Second-degree manslaughter charges have been filed against a mother and her boyfriend in connection with the accidental shooting of the woman's toddler at a Tacoma, Wash., gas station earlier this month.

Recent officer-involved shootings delaying Nance murder case

FARMINGTON — Recent shootings involving police may have caused a delay in a Kaysville murder case.

Deputy Davis County Attorney Brandon Poll said Monday after the hearing for Joseph Nance that “preliminary tests show it (a gun found in October) is the same caliber as the bullets in the motel.”

Police say Nance, 29, shot his father, Gregory A. Nance, multiple times after an argument March 19, 2011, at the Far West Motel in Kaysville.

Evaluations to determine if Hauck can stand trial in mother's murder

FARMINGTON — Attorneys are continuing to wait for the results of two mental competency evaluations before they go forward in a murder case that is almost six years old.

Public defender Todd Utzinger said Monday in 2nd District Court that it will take at least two months before the two evaluators can complete the mental competency assessments of Jeremy Jacob Hauck.

Ogden police seek security video from neighborhood where man invaded home

OGDEN — Police are seeking security camera video from residents in a neighborhood where a woman reportedly confronted a masked gunman in her home earlier this month.

A suspect hasn’t been identified in the March 16 home invasion in the 2800 block of Harrison Boulevard, Police Lt. Scott Conley said Monday, and no other incidents involving the intruder have been reported.

SANFORD, Fla. -- The handgun that killed Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black 17-year-old, was fired once -- not twice -- by a neighborhood crime watch volunteer, according to new information obtained by the Orlando Sentinel.

OGDEN — An Ogden woman says she’s too frightened to return home following an encounter early Friday morning with a masked gunman inside her residence.

Police Lt. Danielle Croyle confirmed Monday that the incident at the home in the 2800 block of Harrison Boulevard is being investigated as a home invasion.

Centerville man pleads not guilty after third evaluation finds him competent

FARMINGTON — After receiving the results of a third competency evaluation, which labeled him fit for trial, a Centerville man pleaded not guilty to trying to kill his neighbor.

Michael L. Selleneit, 54, appeared Thursday in 2nd District Court and entered not guilty pleas to counts of first-degree felony attempted murder and second-degree felony possession of a firearm by a restricted person.

Uncle of boy who brought gun to school facing intense scrutiny

BREMERTON, Wash. -- Patrick Cochran said he was simply trying to do right by his family and fulfill his dying mother's request when he took in his brother's three children.

But over the past two weeks -- since a handgun his 9-year-old nephew brought to his Bremerton elementary school discharged and seriously injured a classmate -- he's been subjected to scrutiny he never could have imagined.

FARMINGTON — A plea bargain may be in the works for an 18-year-old who police say shot another man in January.
