WASHINGTON — The Justice Department inspector general said Monday that the former U.S. attorney in Phoenix retaliated against the main whistleblower in a botched federal gun operation by leaking information to a television producer that was meant to harm the whistleblower’s credibility.

Gun violence makes sharp decline

WASHINGTON — Gun violence has dropped dramatically nationwide over the past two decades, but nearly three-quarters of all homicides are still committed with a firearm, the Justice Department said in a report released Tuesday.

The report, by the department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics, painted an encouraging picture of long-term trends at a time of divisive political debate over guns and legislation to regulate them. Firearms-related homicides declined 39 percent between 1993 and 2011, the report said, while nonfatal firearms crimes fell 69 percent during that period.

NRA celebrates victories, record membrship

WASHINGTON — The National Rifle Association’s convention in Houston this weekend bristled with the combative and triumphant rhetoric of a group that achieved a major victory in 2013: completely defeating the White House-backed package of gun-control legislation.

25 guns collected at airports in a week

WASHINGTON — Twenty-five would-be fliers learned an expensive lesson at the nation’s airports last week: It’s not a good idea to pack a gun in your carry-on bag.

In addition to 25 handguns — 21 of them loaded and six with a chambered round — the Transportation Security Administration confiscated nine stun guns, two “hair brush daggers,” and the usual assortment of knives, clubs and brass knuckles.

Arms dealer helped transform mission of NRA

WASHINGTON — Rene Carlos Vos, an arms dealer in Alexandria, Va., began hanging around the Washington headquarters of the National Rifle Association in the mid-1980s. The NRA’s staff were intrigued to see the garrulous, back-slapping Vos in the group’s seventh-floor suite, home to its lobbying operation and the chief congressional lobbyist, Wayne LaPierre.

Vos and LaPierre struck those who saw them huddle together as an odd couple. Vos took to cowboy boots and neatly pressed western wear.

“He came off like something of a dandy and a hustler, glad-handing with everybody,” recalled Johnny Aquilino, a former NRA communications director.

New NRA president sure to enflame gun control debate

HOUSTON  -- The incoming leader of the National Rifle Association has a long history with the powerful gun rights lobby and a penchant for bold statements that are sure to enflame an already explosive national debate over gun control.

A home in Cumberland County, Ky, is seen on May 1, 2013, where a 2-year-old girl was shot by her 5-year-old brother with a gun designed for children. Investigators say the Tuesday shooting was accidental. The children's mother was home at the time of the shooting Tuesday afternoon but had stepped out to the front porch for a few minutes and "she heard the gun go off," Cumberland County Coroner Gary White said. Authorities said the boy had fatally shot his 2-year-old sister, Caroline, in the chest.

Gun range faces expiration of lease from Centerville

CENTERVILLE — One of the best-kept secrets here may be the 600-yard-long gun range high in the hills above Centerville.

The range, under a locked gate, is where members of Salt Lake City SWAT, as well as Davis County area law enforcement agencies, go to sharpen up their shooting skills.

The range, which rests on 160 acres of city land on the south side of Centerville Canyon, also offers a training range for hunter safety courses, Boy Scout troops looking to earn merit badges and, each October, a place for the public to go to sight-in their rifles for the hunting season.
