22,000 die from treatable diseases from lack of insurance

OGDEN -- Nearly 50 million Americans do not have any health insurance and roughly 22,000 of them die every year from treatable diseases because they can't afford to go to a doctor.

Many businesses offer health benefits to same-sex couples

President Obama's pronouncement last week in favor of same-sex marriage has no legal effect on employers' decisions on whether to offer benefits to workers' domestic partners, but some advocates believe it could reinforce a decade-long trend toward coverage.

Economy hides possible impending shortage of nurses

SOUTH OGDEN — When Bridgette Berkeley goes to work as an intensive care unit nurse at Ogden Regional Medical Center, she feels fortunate.

A July nursing graduate from Stevens-Henager College, Berkeley said she’s bucking the trend to already have the job she wants such a short time after graduation.

Morgan ranked Utah's healthiest county -- again

MORGAN — For the third year in a row, Morgan County is the healthiest county in the state, according to a national report.

The County Health Rankings report, conducted by researchers at the University of Wisconsin, compares counties in a number of categories, including healthy behavior, clinical care and social and economic factors.

Farr West city employees to get insurance refund

FARR WEST — City employees here will each receive a $700 refund thanks to a refund the city received from its health insurance provider, Public Employees Health Plan.

In addition, the city council agreed to also reward each employee with a $300 bonus because of their frugal use of health care benefits. Each of the six Farr West full-time employees will receive $1,000. Council members voted unanimously to approve the refund and bonus.

Davis County employees receive health insurance credit

FARMINGTON -- About $86,000, out of a $586,746 health insurance credit, is being returned to Davis County employees in the form of a two pay-period insurance premium "holiday."
