‘Smoke Out’ offers freebies to quitters

Nov 18 2010 - 12:15am

OGDEN -- Today is the American Cancer Society's Great American Smoke Out, a nationally recognized day for people to walk away from their cigarette and tobacco habits.

Each year, more than 1,100 Utah adults die as a result of their own smoking, according to the Utah Department of Health. As part of the incentive to stop, Weber-Morgan Health Department will give out Quit Kits from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Health Promotions office, 433 23rd St., third floor. The kit contains information on how to quit and a number to call for a personal quit coach.

Smokers also can log on to www.ucanquit2.org, www.UtahQuitNet.com, or www.weber.ut.us for information.

UDOH and Subway are also having an event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Valley Fair Mall Center Court, 3601 S. 2700 West, West Valley City, to encourage Utahns to give up tobacco. Any smoker who attends and pledges to give up tobacco will receive a free 6-inch sub from Subway.

Additionally, anyone who calls the Utah Tobacco Quit Line between today and

Nov. 25 will receive a smoking cessation kit with a card good for a free 6-inch sub at any Subway restaurant in Utah.
