BOUNTIFUL -- Two people were injured after a man led police on a high-speed chase early Wednesday that ended in a crash and had an officer firing shots at the vehicle.
Todd Ronald Gossling, a 39-year-old Layton man, was booked into Davis County Jail after the chase on suspicion of two counts of aggravated assault, failure to respond to an officer's signal, defective equipment and improper location of plates.
Bountiful Lt. Saul Oberg said officers initially responded to a suspicious vehicle that was driving around a business district near 200 W. 500 South at about 4 a.m.
"When they tried to make contact, he fled from them," Oberg said. "When they tried to set up spikes to stop the vehicle, he swerved toward an officer and tried to hit the officer."
Oberg said the officer, who was out of his vehicle laying spikes in the road, fired shots at the fleeing vehicle, but Gossling still didn't stop.
"The vehicle continued to flee into Layton, where the suspect ran a stop sign and collided with another vehicle," Oberg said.
The chase ended at about 2650 East on State Road 193 in Layton. Cpl. Jeff Jolley said speeds approached about 100 miles an hour on the freeway, but were significantly less when Gossling reached the Layton area.
Both drivers were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries. Gossling was released from the hospital and booked into the jail by about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Jolley said they are still unsure why Gossling fled from officers.
"We're still looking into that," he said. "The investigation is continuing. There was a large amount of property in the vehicle -- we're trying to determine if that was a factor."
