OGDEN -- A 13-year-old boy who was struck by a boulder during a Boy Scout hike Thursday night was released from McKay-Dee Hospital on Friday, said Davis County Sheriff's Deputy Scott Harper.
Another 13-year-old boy, who was also hit by the boulder, was transferred to Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City for monitoring.
"Both boys received severe lacerations to their heads," Harper said. "One boy complained of a sore foot and the other complained of a sore shoulder."
Harper said he talked to a friend of the boy who was transferred and was told that the boy is doing well, but doctors just want to monitor his condition for 24 hours.
The Boy Scout troop from Mueller Park Ward in Bountiful was hiking in Adams Canyon on Thursday when some of the boys got ahead of others. While the boys in front were stepping over a large rock the rock became loose, rolled down the steep hill and hit the two boys below.
"One of the boys that was hit by the boulder, fell about 30 feet and was knocked unconscious," Harper said.
The accident occurred around 8:05 p.m. Thursday, and rescuers got the injured boys out of the canyon at around 12:05 a.m. Friday, Harper said.
Harper said the scout adult leaders had first-aid supplies and used bandages from their kits until help arrived.
It took 45 minutes for Davis County paramedics to reach the boys.
Another nearby hiker who is a nurse assisted in the initial treatment before the 30 Davis County Search and Rescue Team members arrived.
They used a rope-pulley system to lower the boys down the mountain.
