t's cool and crisp in Utah. It's a great time to spend a bit of time outdoors, enjoying the recreational pursuit of your choice.

Have a great holiday season, and dress for the elements.

An opening in a fence is shown on a trail just above the 29th Street trailhead in Ogden on Friday. Chris Peterson allows people free access to the trails crossing his property but says he is tired of vandalism, litter, destruction of the landscape, tagging and other irresponsible trail behavior, so he is also posting warning signs. Ogden trails open -- for now -- despite fencing

OGDEN — Fence structures that have been popping up along trails in the Ogden foothills have the hiking community worried, but the landowner who put them there says he’s keeping his property open to the public.

Chris Peterson owns a large piece of property on the Ogden mountainside, which extends all the way from 29th Street nearly to the ridgeline in Malan’s Basin.

Several popular hiking trails intersect Peterson’s property.

Two groups team up to restore 'ghost trails' in Ogden

OGDEN — A pair of Ogden outdoor groups have combined forces to save and improve a set of trails in the mountains above the city.

The Ogden Trails Network Advisory Committee and The Front Climbing Club have formed a strategic partnership to maintain a set of trails between 22nd and 27th streets. The trails lead to several popular rock-climbing spots in the area.

Mike Joseph, chairman of the OTNAC, said the trails were set to be eliminated because they were thought to be “ghost trails.”

Steep Hidden Valley offers nice reward at trail’s end

The Hidden Valley Trail above Ogden’s 22nd Street rewards the hardy hiker with spectacular views of the Wasatch Mountains. While not for everyone, it’s a great escape from the more crowded trails below.

The trail starts from some rock steps on the Indian Trail. Start at the 22nd Street trailhead and go up Indian Trail. After hiking about 10 to 15 minutes, you’ll see the steps on the right.

Some people are pushing to have the name of Negro Bill Canyon, near Moab, Utah, changed because they believe it’s offensive. Others say such a change would cause the area to lose its history. (Courtesy image)

Push is on to change name of Negro Bill Canyon near Moab

SALT LAKE CITY — Louis Williams cringes every time he tells Moab visitors the name of the canyon with the great hike to a stunning arch: Negro Bill Canyon.

Williams, a window cleaner who has lived in Moab for 14 years, is leading a renewed campaign to change the name of the Southern Utah canyon that he and others believe is inappropriate.

He has posted an online petition that has garnered more than 600 signatures and plans to submit a formal renaming application to the U.S. Board of Geographic Names.

Wild Rose Trail offers incredible views for hikers, bikers

The Wild Rose Trail in North Salt Lake is one of the newest and most exciting trail networks in Davis County. The city has been continuously adding new trails and features to keep people coming back. The original Wild Rose Trail was a popular 2.5-mile out-and-back trail that peaks at a local ridgeline, providing expansive views of southern Davis County.
